About The Wine

Pievalta was born in 2003 when Silvano Brescianini — winemaker and Managing Partner of Barone Pizzini — tapped enologist Alessandro Fenino to build something ambitious in the hills of the Marche. By 2008, every wine carried Demeter certification. Biodynamic from the ground up, minimalist in the cellar, and built to prove what Verdicchio can do when you let the grape and the place speak.

This Classico Superiore is sourced from nine vineyards on the left bank of the Esino River — Maiolati Spontini, Montecarotto, and Monte Follonica — where calcareous clay and sandstone soils sit between 200 and 350 meters above sea level. That geology drives the wine's clarity and mineral backbone. The alchemical symbol on the label means spring, and it delivers: this is Verdicchio at its freshest, brightest, most articulate.

Fenino's winemaking is all restraint. Direct pressing, wild-yeast fermentation in stainless steel and concrete, zero interference. The result is a wine that tastes like its place: pale straw-yellow with green reflections, aromas of white peach, lemon peel, and orchard blossoms, then mint, caper leaf, fresh almond, and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant — green apple, citrus pith, white-fleshed pear — with refined minerality, racy acidity, and a saline tension that lingers into a long, savory finish. James Suckling gave it 94 points. Wine Enthusiast called it "a liquid postcard from the Marche."

$26.99 for a 93-94 point biodynamic Verdicchio that drinks like a wine twice the price. The kind of white that makes you rethink what Italy's underrated regions are capable of — and what value actually means.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Chalky minerality dominates with a restrained profile and fruit. A bit almondy upon first sniff, it then opens up to citrus notes and lanolin. Firm, if not racy, acidity with medium body and weight. Savory, chewy and balanced in the finish despite its bite. Drinkable now but best in two to three years. ~94 James Suckling
