About The Wine

Pine Ridge Vineyards sits in the heart of Stags Leap District, founded in 1978 by Gary Andrus and built on 160 estate acres across five of Napa's most distinguished appellations. The winery holds Napa Green certification, and in 2023, winemaker Josh Widaman—who previously crafted Wine Spectator's #1 Wine of the Year at Lewis Cellars—took the reins and immediately began upgrading the cave and winery infrastructure. That timing matters: this is Widaman's first vintage at Pine Ridge, and the wine already carries his signature.

This Cabernet is drawn from all four Pine Ridge estate vineyards in Stags Leap District, totaling 47 planted acres. The soils range from gravelly loam to volcanic rhyolitic tuff—the kind of geological diversity that gives a wine layers most single-vineyard bottlings can't touch. The Stags Leap Palisades warm the vines during the day while cool breezes from San Pablo Bay create dramatic evening temperature swings, producing Cabernets with rare balance: power and elegance in the same glass.

The 2023 vintage started late and went slow, harvested from October 5th to November 1st. Widaman cold-soaked the must for gentle extraction, then fermented in stainless steel, concrete, and oak barrel fermenters at 88°F with rigorous pump-overs to build deep color and fine tannins. The wine aged 20 months in barrel, with 75% French oak.

The wine opens with Hungarian baking spice, blueberry bramble, and maraschino cherry. Cocoa nib threads through a plush palate of blackberry, mandarin, and slate, while bright acidity and polished tannins carry the finish. It's built to evolve over a decade. Pull the cork tonight or give it five years—it'll reward either decision.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is Pine Ridge’s flagship wine - a workhorse that features some Petite Sirah and sees both French and American oak. Tannins are teeth-kissing versus teeth-grabbing, while power and concentration are exhibited through a satin-lined mouthfeel that’s also juicy and fresh, with dark chocolate, plum, graphite, and sweet soil. The fruit shows balance between depth and restraint. ~95 Somm Journal

Pine Ridge’s Napa Cabernet in 2023 is a pleasant wine that reveals blackberry and raspberry fruit alongside cola nut and mild Indian spices. These elements layer gracefully across the medium-bodied palate atop elongated black-tea tannins. Mocha and dried sage resonate on the finish. ~ 93 Decanter

Bright and lifted aromas of blueberries, blackcurrants, violets and raspberry coulis. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, a textural mouthfeel and a finish of licorice, blackberries and bitter chocolate. Succulent and focused. Drink or hold.
~92 James Suckling

Aged 18 months in 35% new French oak and 15% new American oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley sports a saturated purple hue as well as loads of black and blue fruits intermixed with leather, Asian spices, and hints of vanilla. It's medium to full-bodied, ripe, round, and mouthfilling, with sweet tannins and a good finish. ~ 91 Jeb Dunnuck

With fewer than 1,000 cases produced, it might not be easy to find Pine Ridge's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, but it is the sort of wine one would be happy to see on a steakhouse wine list at a reasonable price. Blended from five different AVAs in Napa Valley and aged in a combination of French and American oak (just 15%), it offers up attractive scents of mixed red and black cherries accented by vanilla and mossy oak. It's unabashedly full-bodied, expansive, supple and creamy but is balanced on the finish by soft tannins and bright acids. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
