About The Wine

Quinta do Crasto has been making wine in the Douro since 1615.

Now stewarded by fourth-generation siblings Leonor and Jorge Roquette, the estate pioneered the region as a table-wine producer in the early 1990s — long before it was fashionable to do anything but Port up there. They're among the best producers established by native Portuguese families, and they've built that reputation the old-fashioned way: by farming some of the valley's oldest vines and refusing to cut corners.

The Reserva Old Vines comes from roughly 70-year-old field blends across 40 hectares divided into 42 vineyard lots, the most famous being Vinha da Ponte and Vinha Maria Teresa. The vines dig into schist soils that give the Douro its signature mineral backbone. This is the estate's workhorse cuvee — made in volumes large enough to build a reputation (80,000 to 90,000 bottles annually) while holding to a standard that earned it a loyal international following. It's become a textbook example of modern Douro red: structured, complex, and priced to prove you don't need to spend Napa money to drink this well.

2023 delivered both ripeness and freshness — a vintage that threaded the needle.

The wine aged 18 months in mostly French oak (85%), with 15% American, 65% of the barrels new. The result is medium- to full-bodied and fine-boned, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.71, and the kind of acid spine that keeps the wine lively instead of heavy. The oak is generous but integrated — supporting the fruit instead of smothering it.

On the nose: fresh gum cistus, berry fruit, and delicate spice. On the palate: full, textured, silky tannins, a stylish start that builds into something serious.

The finish is long, balanced, and lingering. Bottled unfiltered, so some sediment may form as it ages. This is built for hearty meat and game — the kind of wine that makes a standing rib roast feel like the right call.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A red wine made from old vines with an average age of 70 years (approximately 30 different grape varieties), aged for 18 months in French (85%) and American (15%) oak barrels. Another excellent vintage for this wine, overflowing with ripe red and black fruits, followed by floral, balsamic, and sweet spice notes, all supported by refreshing acidity and firm tannins. Still young, it has structure, fruit concentration, but also fluidity and refinement, as well as a succulent and long finish with earthy, graphite, licorice, blackberry, and cassis touches. ~94 Revista Adega
