About The Wine

There are maybe a dozen California Chardonnays I'd hand to someone who only drinks Burgundy. This is one of them.

The fruit comes from Rochioli — the vineyard on Westside Road the Rochioli family has farmed since the late '50s, now run by the third generation. They turn down almost every winery that asks. Ramey has been making a single-vineyard bottling from this site for years, which tells you more about the relationship than any tasting note will.

David Ramey founded the label in 1996, after Pétrus and Dominus and Chalk Hill, and built his Chardonnay around whole-cluster pressing, native yeast, and full native malolactic in barrel. The 2023 is 74% Mid-40 block, 26% River block, 22.7 Brix, twenty months in French oak with just 20% new wood, bottled unfiltered. The result is lean, chalky, and long, with the oak sitting in the back of the room where it belongs. Roast a chicken. Open it an hour early.

100% Chardonnay, drawn from the Mid-40 and River blocks of Rochioli Vineyard.

Pale gold in the glass. Green apple, pear, and lemon cream lead, with white flowers and dried herbs sitting just behind. The palate is broad but tightly wound — chalk, slate, and citrus oil down the center, oak held well back at 20% new. Full native malolactic builds texture here, not butter.

The finish is long, saline, and bone dry. Drinking now with an hour of air; the critics have it running well into the 2030s.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"A laser-focused, nicely lean and precise wine from a great vineyard that was one of Russian River Valley's early chardonnay sites. It holds its crisp green apple and mineral flavors rather tightly now, suggesting a good potential for further aging. Full-bodied. Drinkable now and best from 2030." ~96 James Suckling

"The 2023 Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard is a potent, intensely mineral wine, a Chardonnay that captures the personality of this site. Broad and ample on the palate, the 2023 possesses superb textural intensity and the drive to match. Slate, mint, white flowers, chalk and dried herbs linger on the polished, salivating close." ~95 Vinous Media

"A stunning version, with a laser beam of pear, lemon cream and Honeycrisp apple, plus crunchy star fruit, quince, nectarine and lemon salt notes. Accents of lemon verbena, lemon oil, white tea, marzipan and ginger puree linger on the harmonious and complex finish. Drink now through 2039. 964 cases made." ~95 Wine Spectator
