About The Wine

Robert Mondavi — does he really need an introduction?

In 1966, Robert Mondavi established his eponymous winery with a visionary goal: to create Napa Valley wines that could rival the world’s finest. To fulfill this vision, he chose the iconic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, California, renowned for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

With over fifty years of leadership in California’s wine industry, Robert Mondavi Winery has earned its place as a premier institution, setting the standard for innovation and excellence. The To Kalon Vineyard consistently ranks among the world’s top vineyards, celebrated for its extraordinary terroir and role in shaping the identity of modern Napa Valley.

The legacy of Robert Mondavi lives on under the stewardship of Geneviève Janssens, Chief Winemaker and one of Napa’s most respected figures. With decades of experience—including her pivotal role in crafting the inaugural vintage of Opus One—Geneviève continues to uphold Mondavi’s founding philosophy: that wine is not just a product of the land, but a reflection of passion, culture, and time.

2023 Napa Valley vintage isn’t just another great year – it’s the year that will be etched in history. Wine experts are calling it "the vintage of a lifetime," and for good reason. The perfect blend of cool temperatures, morning fog, and balanced sunlight created conditions so exceptional, they’re being compared to Bordeaux's iconic 1961 vintage.

As The Wine Independent put it, 2023 is "a winemaker's dream in terms of wine style." Wine Bible author Karen MacNeil calls it "one of the most phenomenal vintages ever in Napa Valley." This is Napa at its finest, with wines of depth, power, and elegance that will be the talk of the wine world for decades to come.

Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with the four other Bordeaux varietals (Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec) rounding out the blend. Aged approximately 18 months in French oak, roughly one-third new.

Pour the 2023 and you get classic Napa Cab in the glass — deep ruby, perfumed with dark cherry, plum, and that signature whiff of cedar and sweet tobacco. The palate is full-bodied and plush, layered with grilled plum, dried blueberry, and savory tobacco-leaf notes. Tannins are medium to full but smoothly polished, with the fresh acidity of the cool 2023 vintage keeping everything lifted. Vanilla and warm cinnamon on the finish from French oak, with a long, generous close.

Drinks beautifully now with an hour in a decanter. Will hold and improve through 2030+.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Mondavi's biggest production and most affordable cabernet is extremely well made, powerful but drinkable. Full-bodied and richly flavored, with medium to full tannins, it’s packed with dark cherries, grilled plums, dried blueberries and savory, tobacco-leaf nuances. Drink now or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling
