About The Wine

Vietti is one of Piedmont's most respected names, a house whose reputation rests on decades of brilliant Barolo and Barbaresco. When they turned their attention to Timorasso—a nearly extinct white grape revived in the last thirty years—they brought the same rigor and vineyard intelligence that built their reputation in red wine.

The 2023 Derthona is a blend from three distinct zones within the Colli Tortonesi appellation, each contributing texture, minerality, and aromatic complexity. The grapes are grown around Monleale in limestone and clay soils, fermented across ceramic vessels, oak casks, and stainless steel tanks over four weeks, then aged ten months on fine lees with regular batonnage. No malolactic fermentation—just structure, acidity, and precision.

Timorasso is not a polite white. It's phenolic, powerful, and built for the table—think of it as the white wine for Barolo drinkers. The 2023 is deep and resonant, layering peach, apricot, chamomile, and dried flowers over a core of chalky minerality.

There's honey, acacia blossom, and a bracing line of acidity that carries the wine across the palate and stretches the finish.

James Suckling scored it 96 points and called out the "amazing white peach aftertaste." Vinous noted the "deep, rich and phenolic" character and declared it "a rich, heady white for the dinner table." This is a wine that belongs next to braised veal, roasted chicken, or aged cheese—not a patio sipper.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A layered wine with assertive leesy aromas of lemon peel, lemon leaves, spring flowers, green apples and chalky minerality. Silky texture with zesty acidity, a medium body and a bright, savory finish. Good extraction and an amazing white peach aftertaste. ~96 James Suckling

The 2023 Timorasso is a blend from Vietti's holdings in three distinct zones within the Derthona appellation. Deep, rich and phenolic, the 2023 is a textured, resonant wine. Peach, apricot, chamomile and dried flowers fill out the layers. It's a rich, heady white for the dinner table. Floral and citrus overtones lift the finish.~ 93 Vinous Media

Pouring a bright straw/silver color, the 2023 Timorasso Colli Tortonesi Derthona is the estate’s classic expression of the variety. It opens with Riesling-like aromatics of lime candy, ripe peach, tropical flowers, chive, and hints of mango. Medium-bodied, it carries nicely across the palate, with a savory, mouthwatering finish marked by bitter lime peel and salty earth. While the nose can be somewhat deceptive, the palate clearly expresses Timorasso’s character. ~ 92 Jeb Dunnuck
