About The Wine

Barone di Villagrande isn't just Sicily's oldest winery — it's been farming the eastern slopes of Mount Etna since 1727, nearly three centuries of volcanic terroir in a single family's hands. At 700 meters above sea level near Milo, they grow Nerello Mascalese the way Etna has always demanded: organically, patiently, and with the kind of restraint that makes the island's best wines feel impossibly pure.

Nerello Mascalese is Etna's signature red grape — aromatic, structured, built on acidity and mineral tension rather than brute force. Grown at altitude on volcanic soils, it's a grape that tastes like the mountain itself: red berries, wild herbs, dried flowers, and that smoky volcanic edge Etna does better than anywhere else. Think Nebbiolo's elegance with Pinot Noir's lift, all wrapped in crushed stone and sea salt.

The 2024 vintage brought dry, hot conditions through spring and summer, then late-July rain that gave the vines just enough moisture to balance.

Cherries, blackberries, and redcurrants on the nose, with a background of pepper and liquorice. Sour cherry, raspberry, wild herbs, dried flowers, and cracked black pepper layered beneath.

The palate is silky and elegant — red berries, subtle spice, and smoky volcanic minerality, with fine tannins and lively acidity that give the wine remarkable freshness and impressive food-friendly balance. Very elegant, with well-integrated acidity and a fruity finish that won't quit.

THE PRODUCER

Barone di Villagrande

Barone di Villagrande is one of Etna’s historic wine estates, with the Nicolosi family cultivating vineyards on the volcano’s eastern slopes since 1727. Now in its tenth generation, the family farms vineyards at around 700 meters above sea level, where volcanic soils, elevation, and cooling sea breezes create distinctive, elegant wines.

The estate also played an important role in Etna’s winemaking history: in 1869, Paolo Nicolosi built the family cellar and pioneered separate vinification of white and red grapes, laying the foundation for what would become its renowned Etna Bianco Superiore. Today, Marco Nicolosi continues that legacy, combining centuries of knowledge with a deep commitment to expressing the unique character of Etna.
