About The Wine

Founded in the 1970s by Paolo Panerai, Castellare emerged from the union of four historic estates in the heart of Chianti Classico. From the start, Panerai pushed boundaries — pioneering the first experimental vineyard in the region with the University of Milan and Florence, isolating a unique Sangiovese clone (Sangioveto) that defines the house style, and introducing small French oak barriques to Italy when most producers still relied on concrete tanks.

The Chianti Classico tells the history and character of the Chianti area in a glass. Produced exclusively from native Sangiovese (90%) and Canaiolo (10%) — no international varieties, just the purest tradition. The vineyards sit at 1,200 feet elevation, higher than most in the appellation, and yields are kept deliberately low, far below the DOCG maximum. The result is fruit with uncommon concentration and aromatic richness.

The 2024 vintage is surprising for its freshness — soft, velvety tannins, balanced and enveloping on the palate. Bright ruby in the glass, with aromas of tart red cherries, tobacco, sunbaked earth, and a hint of cedar spice. Firm structure and refreshing acidity make it a versatile food wine — the kind of Chianti that punches well above its price.

Every label features a different bird, reiterating Castellare's commitment to protecting nature. Synthetic chemicals and hunting are both forbidden on the property. Pull the cork tonight — this is $33 Chianti that drinks like bottles twice the price.
