About The Wine

The Catena family didn't just put Argentine wine on the map — they drew the map. Four generations, 120+ years, the pioneers of high-altitude viticulture in Mendoza, and one of the most decorated wine families on Earth. Their flagship Adrianna Vineyard is the first South American vineyard ever to earn 100 points from Robert Parker.

Paraje Altamira sits at the southern edge of the Uco Valley, a high-altitude appellation where altitude, alluvial soils, and extreme diurnal shifts produce Malbec with unusual mineral tension and aromatic precision. This is where Catena sources fruit for wines that drink well above their price.

The 2024 vintage benefits from cold maceration for three to eight days at under 50°F, extracting aromatics before fermentation. The wine then ferments for 12–18 days with extended maceration, followed by 11–13 months in French oak — 25–40% new, the rest second and third use. The result is a Malbec with the structure and complexity you'd expect from bottles asking twice as much.

In the glass: elegant, mineral, slightly spicy Malbec with deep texture and layered flavors. The combination of intense sunlight and cool nights at altitude yields a wine with lift, freshness, and the kind of aromatic detail mass-market Malbec never approaches.

$29.99 for a wine built like the $50–60 bottles. Buy the six-pack.

Elegant, mineral, slightly spicy Malbec with deep texture. Intense aromatics from high-altitude vineyards — ripe red fruit, black pepper, thyme, and cedar. Fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins frame a long, bright finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Ripe aromas of cool blue fruit, stemmy herbs, fresh mulberries, lavender and dark cherries. Medium-bodied with al dente dark fruit and fine-grained tannins. A bit more vertical than most of the appellation’s wines, with good length and tannins. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
