About The Wine

Ruche is one of Piedmont's rarest indigenous varieties — planted almost exclusively in a handful of communes around Asti, where chalky soils and continental climate give the grape its signature lift and aromatic intensity. Marco Maria Crivelli is among the small group of growers who believe Piedmont's "other" varieties deserve the same reverence as Barolo and Barbaresco, and his work proves it.

His family planted these five hectares in Castagnole Monferrato in 1919. The vines grow in mineral-rich sand and tufa — light, porous soils that pull tension and salinity into the wine instead of weight. Crivelli farms without herbicides or pesticides, prioritizing vineyard-centric purity, and vinifies entirely in stainless steel to preserve the grape's aromatics.

The 2024 growing season brought high spring rainfall and a stabilized summer — preserving natural acidity and producing a wine with lean, precise architecture rather than broad density. The result is a red with fine-grained tannins, mid-palate energy, and a finish driven by mineral persistence and clean, refreshing nerve.

In the glass: rose petals, black cherry, cinnamon, and cracked pepper. The body is medium and silky, withkirsch and black raspberry riding a backbone of bright acidity and chalky mineral. It's crunchy, herbal, floral — the kind of rare Italian red that makes you wonder why anyone settles for the mass-market stuff.

$34.99 for a wine this distinctive, from vines this old, in a region this revered. That's the number.
