About The Wine

Diatom specializes in one thing: Chardonnay stripped to its essence. Named for the diatomaceous earth—ancient plankton fossils—that defines Santa Barbara County's oceanic soils, the winery pursues subtraction and refinement. Winemaker Brewer keeps the grapes' natural malic acid instead of converting it to lactic, preserving the bright, unadulterated character of the fruit without the buttery weight most California Chardonnays lean on. The result is transparency and purity of intent.

This 2024 is crafted from sustainably farmed Central Coast fruit and aged six months in stainless steel vats—no oak, no interference. At 14.5% ABV, it's elegantly structured and quietly luxurious.

The wine offers vivid citrus, orchard fruit, and floral notes layered with saline minerality. Think lemon, citrus blossom, wet sand, white peach, quince, and a whiff of lemon verbena. Mouthwatering acidity and crunchy sea salt minerality carry it through a sleek, focused finish.

Santa Barbara County's marine landscape is stark, windswept, and mineral-driven—Chardonnay grown here reflects place, not winemaking tricks. This is the kind of Chardonnay that makes buttery grocery-store bottles taste emotionally vacant. Minimalist in method, maximum in impact.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Based on 100% Chardonnay and aged six months in stainless steel vats, the 2024 Chardonnay has a medium to light gold hue and offers exotic citrus, minty herbs, and subtle tropical flower notes that all define this clean, crisp, remarkably pure Chardonnay. It puts on weight and richness with time in the glass and is a terrific mix of both richness and freshness. This is a no-brainer purchase for those who love Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, and I love its purity. Drink 2025-2030. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

This has a succulent texture, remaining pure and long throughout. Salinity, minerals and springtime blossoms stay taut alongside lemons and crunchy orchard fruit with a lingering kick of tactile melon pith. ~93 James Suckling

This white’s sleek mix of ripe pear, ginger and pomelo flavors show striking restraint, coiled around a mouthwatering thread of acidity. Details of lime zest, white peppercorn and dried tarragon linger, along with a whiff of sea spray. Drink now. 20,000 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator

Oyster shell, honeydew rind, lime candy and grass aromas make for a complex, zesty nose on this bottling. The palate is zippy and grassy as well, almost like a Sauv Blanc, showing brisk lime zest flavors. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
