2024 Valter Scarbolo 'Il Ramato' Pinot Grigio Venezia Giulia DOC

Ramato means copper, and that's the color you get when Pinot Grigio spends a little time on its skins. It's the old Friulian way of making this grape, and it gives you a wine with more color, more texture and more to say than the Pinot Grigio most people know.

Wine lovers who don't know Friuli are missing some of the most striking and delicious wines in Italy, and the value is hard to beat.

Scarbolo was founded by Gino Scarbolo, a farmer's son who started out making small batches of wine on the family farm. He later moved the family to Lauzacco, bought his first parcels and planted vines. His son Valter grew up between the vines and the cellar, began formal studies in viticulture and winemaking in 1982, and took the family from bulk wine to one of the most emblematic estates in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Today Valter and Maria Grazia run the winery, with their son and daughter involved in the business. They farm 70 acres under what they call logic viticulture, which means intervening in the life of the vine as little as possible. The vineyards sit with the Alps to the north, the Adriatic to the south and the Friulian Plain to the west.
