---Chateau Cos d'Estournel has stood as one of Bordeaux's Deuxiemes Crus since the original 1855 Classification — the hill of pebbles in Saint-Estephe that sits adjacent to Lafite and has built a reputation for wines that are rich, concentrated, age-worthy, and unmistakable. The estate's grand vin carries a unique incense quality in its perfume that doesn't show up anywhere else in Bordeaux, a signature that collectors recognize immediately.

The 2025 vintage delivered exceptional climatic conditions across the Left Bank, and Cos responded with a wine of perfect balance — density and energy without excess. Technical director Dominique Arangoits called it "a very interesting vintage," the kind of understatement that signals something real. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, resting in 50% new French oak, and it's already showing the poise and concentration that define great Cos.

In the glass: deep ruby, with a powerful nose of spice, cedar, garrigue, rosemary, thyme, ripe blackberries, blueberries, cassis, and graphite. The palate is elegant and fresh, with lively acidity, tightly knit tannins that are ripe and integrated, and a harmonious finish with beautiful fruit persistence. The structure is built to age — this is a wine meant to develop over decades, not disappear in a few years.

Antonio Galloni summed it up cleanly: "The 2025 Cos d'Estournel is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Grand, dramatic and sweeping, with notable textural intensity, the 2025 hits all the right notes. More than anything else, I am blown away by the wine's magnificent balance. A masterpiece." James Suckling scored it 98-99, William Kelley called it one of the finest Cos has produced in a decade, and Adrian Van Velsen gave it 98-100 for being "both expressive and restrained; a monumental wine full of tension." The critics agree. We agree. This is what Second Growth Bordeaux is supposed to taste like.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The purity of fruit in this is fascinating with plums, currants and other dark fruits. Then there is another layer of spices and chocolate. So much cassis. Full and very layered with chewy polished tannins and a long, long finish. Just starting to open. Changes all the time. ~ 99 James Suckling

Cassis, currants, smoky tobacco, chocolate, and graphite all define the 2025 Château Cos D'Estournel, a powerful, ripe, concentrated beauty based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot that's still resting in 50% new barrels. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, integrated oak, and a great finish. It stays lively, balanced, and remarkably fresh despite its weight and richness, and I'd happily put this up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. ~ 97-99 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2025 Cos d'Estournel is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Grand, dramatic, and sweeping, with notable textural intensity, the 2025 hits all the right notes. Even in the very early going, 2025 is magical. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, tobacco, lavender and mocha build effortlessly in the glass. More than anything else, I am blown away by the wine's magnificent balance. A masterpiece. ~ 96-99 Vinous Media

The 2025 Cos d'Estournel appears to be one of the finest wines this property has produced in the last decade. Unwinding in the glass with a deep bouquet of dark berry fruit mingled with violets, pencil shavings, burning embers and anise, it's full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a broad attack, layered mid-palate and beautifully fresh, concentrated flavors. All of this terroir's inherent power is present, contained within very classical proportions at 13.3% alcohol. The 2025 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. ~ 96-98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Cos d'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel produces the eponymous grand vin, the second wine Les Pagodes de Cos since the 1994 vintage from the estate's younger vines, and Château Marbuzet from fruit of nearby plots. The property is adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighboring commune of Pauillac. In July 2008, Michel Reybier, owner of Cos d'Estournel, purchased Chateau Montelena from Jim and Bo Barrett. Robert Parker described the Montelena transaction as 'one of the biggest stories in my 30 years in the wine field'. An executive committee including Bo Barrett, Greg Ralston, Dominique Arangoits, and Jean-Guillaume Prats as president was set to oversee the 2008 vintage. The future strategy included plans to expand the brand and replant 75% of the vineyards. By November 2008, the agreement was cancelled by Chateau Montelena.
