About The Wine

There are rosés. And then there is Whispering Angel — the wine that, almost single-handedly, convinced the world that rosé could be serious, elegant, and worth seeking out. When Sacha Lichine acquired a dilapidated estate northeast of St. Tropez in 2006, his stated ambition was audacious: to make the greatest rosés in the world. Most people thought it was a fantasy. Nineteen vintages later, Whispering Angel is the best-selling premium rosé on the planet, and Chateau d'Esclans is the estate credited with igniting what the wine world now calls the "Rosé Renaissance."

The chateau sits in the Esclans Valley, high in the hills of Provence's Var department, 25 kilometers from the ancient Roman city of Fréjus and within reach of the Mediterranean coast. The property's origins trace back to the time of the Gauls — ancient terroir for a very modern phenomenon. In 2019, LVMH (the same group behind Dom Pérignon and Moët & Chandon) acquired a controlling stake, a signal that the world's most powerful luxury conglomerate recognized what Sacha Lichine had built.

Whispering Angel is made from Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle (Vermentino) — the classic Provençal trio — sourced from the finest vineyards in the Esclans Valley and surrounding Côtes de Provence. Grapes are harvested at night to lock in freshness, then sorted by optical eye, gently crushed, and chilled immediately to 7–8°C before fermentation entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel. No oak. No shortcuts. The result is a wine that drinks like Provence looks — luminously pale, bone dry, and effortlessly elegant.

Think of it as the Provence equivalent of a top-flight Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, food-friendly, and endlessly versatile — only more refined, with a silkiness that makes it equally at home at a casual summer lunch or a fine dining table.

Grenache, Cinsault, and Rolle.

Whispering Angel pours an iconic, luminously pale pink. On the nose, fresh red berry fruit, rose hip, white peach, and delicate floral notes with a whisper of citrus freshness.

The palate is ripe and fleshy yet bone dry, with a silky, round texture and excellent concentration. Vibrant acidity gives the wine its signature energy and lift, leading to a smooth, clean finish with no astringency. A benchmark for the Provençal style.

An elegant and scented nose of pink cherry pits, peach skin and cherry blossoms. Medium-bodied with fresh, round acidity and a textured finish. Elegant and pure finish. Drink in 2027. ~ 91 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Château d’Esclans

Château d’Esclans is a renowned Provençal estate located in the heart of southern France, celebrated for redefining rosé as a premium wine category. With origins dating back centuries—including early use as a lookout site in Gaulish times—the château rose to global prominence after Sacha Lichine acquired it in 2006 and set out to create the world’s greatest rosés.

Today, it is best known for iconic wines like Whispering Angel and Garrus, combining old-vine fruit, meticulous winemaking, and innovative techniques to produce elegant, complex rosés that have driven the modern “rosé renaissance.”
