Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste sits on one of the finest gravel plateaus in Pauillac — 136 acres between Latour and Lynch-Bages, classified fifth-growth in 1855 and owned by the Borie family since 1978. The vineyard's composition hasn't changed since that 1855 classification: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, planted on deep gravel over limestone. The name itself comes from the old Gascon word "puy" — hillock — a nod to the high ground that gives the estate its structure and its signature Pauillac character.

The 2025 is the first vintage from the new gravity-fed winery, picked September 4–18 at yields of just 30 hectoliters per hectare — well below normal. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, aged in 65% new oak. Critics are calling it one of the top vintages this property has produced.

The wine opens with ultra-classic Pauillac aromatics: blackcurrant, graphite, lead pencil, and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with concentrated layers, ripe tannins, and a cool precision — mint, blueberries, wet stones, and that signature graphite through the finish. It's fresh, refined, and built to evolve for decades.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste doesn't chase trends. It makes Cabernet-dominant Pauillac the way it's been made since the 19th century, and the results speak plainly. The 2025 scored 94–97 points across the board — Parker, Suckling, Dunnuck, Martin all converged. This is why Bordeaux futures exist: to buy wines like this before the world catches up.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Excellent GPL, medium- to full-bodied with a great expression of dark fruit that is evenly distributed. It’s fresh and precise with grainy, integrated tannins that should only integrate more. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot. ~ 96-97 James Suckling

The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste reveals a classic, refined bouquet of cassis, dark berries, cedar and lead pencil, with discreet floral nuances. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and precise, it’s built around a well-defined core of fruit framed by finely grained, youthful, filigreed tannins with a tensile profile. Less demonstrative than some of its peers in Pauillac, it privileges balance and typicity over sheer power, concluding with a long, elegant and mineral finish. Produced from a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, this is the first vintage vinified in the estate’s new gravity-fed cellar, enabling more precise parcel selection—an evolution that appears to reinforce the wine’s precision and coherence. ~ 95-97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the first to be made in the new gravity-fed winery. It was picked between September 4 and 18 at 30 hl/ha, much lower than normal, with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (76%). Matured in 65% new oak, it has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, touches of graphite emerging with aeration, beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins. Definitely one of the most refined GPLs that I have tasted at this stage, very harmonious, complex and engaging. Superb persistence on the finish; this is a complete Pauillac that is going to give immense pleasure. ~ 94-96 Vinous Media

A Cabernet-dominant blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot from yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, the 2025 Château Grand Puy Lacoste is gorgeous, with ultra-classic Pauillac aromatics of red and black fruits, lead pencil, graphite, and crushed stone. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's up there with the top vintages of this cuvée, and it doesn't get more Pauillac than this. ~ 94-96 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a winery in the Pauillac appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The vineyards total roughly 36 hectares (90 acres) with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 75% of plantings, Merlot 20%, and Cabernet Franc 5%. The vineyard consists of deep gravel top soil on a limestone base. Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste produces about 12,000 cases of wine in an average year. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, then wines are aged in oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months. The winery also makes a second wine called Lacoste-Borie. The property was originally owned by the Guiraud family in the 16th century. The estate received the name Lacoste from the marriage of François Lacoste to Marie-Jeanne de Saint Guirons in the 19th century. Pierre-Frédéric Lacoste rebuilt the château in 1855.
