Directly across the road from Château Haut-Brion sits an estate that was never given the crown — and doesn't need it.

In the 1855 Classification, only five châteaux earned First Growth status. La Mission wasn't one of them. It didn't matter. For over a century, critics, collectors, and even the Haut-Brion family itself have quietly conceded what the classification refused to put on paper: in more vintages than anyone likes to admit, La Mission is the better wine.

Robert Parker built part of his legend on this rivalry, repeatedly scoring La Mission above its more famous neighbor and awarding it a perfect 100 points in 1982 — a vintage that made both estates immortal. Since then, director Jean-Philippe Delmas has kept the streak alive: since 1982, La Mission has earned more perfect scores than any other Left Bank property, period.
