About The Wine

Jansz Tasmania has done one thing since 1986: make sparkling wine the right way. Louis Roederer partnered with Heemskerk Wines that year to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Pipers River — Tasmania's first premium vintage sparkler came from those vines. The Hill-Smith Family bought the property in 1998 and kept the focus sharp: traditional Methode Champenoise, cool-climate fruit, and nothing else.

This Premium Cuvee is the house's calling card. 66% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Noir, all estate-grown from the north (Pipers River and Tamar Valley) and south (Coal River Valley). Each batch is vinified separately to maximize blending options, then aged a minimum 18 months on lees. The result is what happens when a single-minded house works fruit from one of the coldest, cleanest wine regions on earth.

In the glass: pale gold, fine persistent mousse. Honeysuckle, citrus zest, fresh strawberries — then the lees-age kicks in with nougat and roasted nuts. The palate is delicate but focused, creamy texture balanced by bright acidity, finishing dry and long with citrus and nougat. Winemaker Jennifer Doyle (and Teresa Heuzenroeder, with three decades of cool-climate experience) built a wine that drinks like something twice the price.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"A fresh and lifted nose is complete with jasmine, a little marzipan, meringue, lemon pith, lime blossom and a crushed limestone crisp minerality. The mousse is fine and creamy yet a little reserved after pouring with abundant fizz. Plenty of freshness. A great, easy-drinking aperitif style NV hovering in a delicate citrus zone. Medium finish with acidity well integrated, this is an ideal splash for a hot Aussie afternoon. The slightest popcorn kernel note on the finish. With a minimum of 18 months on lees, fruit from multiple vineyard regions within Tasmania and full malo, this NV is a well-crafted iteration." ~90 Decanter

"Grapefruit, green apples and lemon sherbet on the nose of this crisp, tangy sparkling. It’s light- to medium-bodied with fine bubbles and a balanced, refreshing finish. Drink now. " ~90 James Suckling
