About The Wine

If there's a place where wine miracles exist, it is the Jerez triangle. Bodegas Lustau has the privilege of being the only winery to produce wines within the three regions of Jerez: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María, and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

This winery had its modest beginnings in 1986 when José Ruiz-Berdejo began to produce small batches of wine. Little did he know that this small winery that began as a humble dream would become one of the emblematic sherry-producing wineries in the world.

Some years later, this family-owned winery passed into the hands of the Luis Caballero company, a large producer of spirits; this change of ownership allowed a great development and growth of Bodegas Lustau.

Bodegas Lustau has been recognized worldwide thanks to its high-quality standards and constant innovation. It was named Best Spanish Winery in 2011 and Best Sherry Winery in 2014 and 2016 by the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

Since its inception, Bodegas Lustau has remained faithful to its main objective: to offer the consumer the widest and most select collection of Sherry specialties.

The winemaking team behind Lustau wines is second to none. Sergio Martínez is the main winemaker, who is backed by years and years of experience. For five consecutive years, he has been awarded the World's Best Fortified Winemaker by the International Wine Challenge.

Almacenistas are independent Sherry artisans who have historically been producing and aging small stocks of Sherry. For decades, Lustau has led a revolutionary project: bottling a small range of these authentic wines unblended, preserving their genuineness.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

An enchanting complexity of caramel, toasted nuts, and soy glides across the nose and palate. Beautifully silky and sumptuous with a gorgeous salty, umami length. ~ 95 Decanter World Wine Awards (Gold Medal)

Color: yellow. Nose: neat, expressive, complex, pungent. Palate: full, flavourful, dry, round. ~95 Guía Penin

The Spanish word almacenista means warehousekeeper or wholesaler. In Sherry-speak, Almacenistas are generally small family businesses that buy or produce young base wines and mature them in soleras for several years. Once (semi-)mature, they are sold to larger houses for blending, or in special growers/instances, produced as a single wine, like this. There once were over 50 almacenistas in the Jerez area; now there are fewer than twenty. José Luis González Obregón has three wines in Lustau's Almacenista range, with Lustau being the first to spotlight these wines/growers. Rich, dry, beauty, with roasted almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts throughout. This complex and layered wine weaves caramel, orange oil, chamomile, preserved lemons, and lightly smoked marine salts over and over, cascading the umami flavors on the palate and hauntingly long finish. Such a mesmerizing wine, and a great reminder to drink more sherry. ~94 Gismondi on Wine

Flawless on the nose, this amontillado, purchased from the solera of Señor González Obregón, is full of lift, power, and toffee on the nose. There's zero excess weight to the palate, which features flavors of nuts, salt, caramel, and dried apricot. On the finish, a hint of buttered toast offers an umami offset to acid-driven raciness. ~93 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Bodegas Lustau

Founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an almacenista, which also grew its own vines. Almacenistas generally bought young wine (Ruiz made his own) and matured them in their own soleras, before selling them to larger houses, who would either blend it with older wine, or mature it longer in their larger soleras. It wasn't until the 1950s that Ruiz's son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega began bottling and exporting his own wine.

Now based in Jerez, Lustau is the only winery that has sites in all three cities of the Sherry triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau buys fruit from vineyards, while also maintaining two of its own. The first is the Montegilillo vineyard, which is on the white limestone albariza soil local to the region. The second is the Las Cruces vineyard, which is on sandy coastal soils.

Lustau now produces a range of Sherry, but achieves the most recognition for its Almacenista collection. Continuing the tradition, the collection is series of single offerings from smaller producers that Lustau bottles and distributes. The style of the local producer is maintained and their name is featured on the bottle.
