About The Wine

Vermouth was born in Piedmont, but Silvio Carta reimagined it on Sardinia, and the result carries the island in every sip. From the family's home in Zeddiani, in the province of Oristano, Elio Carta set out to build a vermouth rooted in Sardinian character rather than northern tradition, drawing on the wild botanicals that grow across the island's coast and hills. It's a bottle that feels tied to a specific place, and that sense of origin is exactly what sets it apart from the category's more familiar names.

The color is a deep, intense ebony that catches the light like polished wood. The nose is pure Sardinian macchia mediterranea, the fragrant coastal scrub that defines the island: rosemary, bay laurel, and pine needles give way to resin and pine nuts, with a faint breath of sea air underneath. On the palate it's intense yet soft and round, beautifully balanced against the 18% alcohol, with layers of wild herbs and ripe fruit that build steadily before resolving into a clean, decisive finish. What lingers is the mineral trail, long and distinctly Sardinian, a reminder of where this vermouth comes from.

That quality has been recognized well beyond the island. It earned Gold at the 2023 Meiningers International Spirits Award and Gold at the 2020 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Spirits Selection, with additional medals across recent vintages. Serve it over a large cube with an orange twist to let the botanicals open, build it into a Negroni where its herbal depth holds its own, or take the estate's own advice and pour it alongside a wedge of 60-month Parmigiano Reggiano. However you reach for it, this is vermouth with a genuine sense of place.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Think fruitcake in liquid form. This amber-hued vermouth is redolent with dried apricot, dried apple and sticky maple syrup, finishing nutty, rounded and bold. Would play well with whiskey or aged rum. Aged for 12 years in small Sardinian chestnut barrels. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

Silvio Carta founded his eponymous company in Baratili San Pietro in the 1950’s, devoting himself to making traditional wines and spirits of the region. Sixty years on, Silvio, together with his son Elio, the latter at the head since 1973, still devote themselves to these aims. Made from a blend of aged Vernaccia di Oristano Riserva, this red vermouth is infused with a blend of forged Sardinian herbs, including Myrtle, Thyme, Lentisk (Mastic), and Artemisia. Warm, and complexed, with ample scrubby rosemary, bay leaf, dark honey, molasses, toasted walnut, all studded with sea salts. The intense, sweeter, and silken palate lingers long, releasing citrus oils and toasted pine nuts on the finish. (Treve Ring). ~91 Gismondi on Wine
