Why Greek Wines?
Volcanic islands, mountain reds and native grapes the rest of the world is only now discovering.
Assyrtiko & the Volcano
Santorini's white grape grows in volcanic ash, trained into wind-proof basket vines, some centuries old. Bone-dry, saline, electric - Chablis that went to the beach.
Reds With Real Structure
Agiorgitiko from Nemea brings dark-cherry velvet; Xinomavro from Naoussa brings the structure critics compare to Nebbiolo. Greece does serious red.

A Wine Journey Through Greece
From the Aegean to the mountains of Macedonia.
Santorini
Volcanic ash, no phylloxera ever, ancient basket-trained vines - and Assyrtiko with acidity like a blade. The most dramatic vineyard landscape in Europe.
Nemea & the Peloponnese
Agiorgitiko country: plush, dark-fruited reds from St. George's grape, plus the aromatic Malagouzia revival in Achaia and Robola in the limestone of Cephalonia.
Naoussa & Macedonia
The cool north, where Xinomavro - 'acid-black' - makes age-worthy reds in the Nebbiolo mold and one of Europe's most underrated roses.
Greek Wine, Answered
What is Assyrtiko?
Greece's great white grape, at its best on the volcanic island of Santorini: bone-dry, high-acid, saline and mineral. The vines are trained into low woven baskets to survive the island wind, and the wines are built for seafood.
Is Greek wine good?
The modern scene is excellent and still underpriced. Since the 2000s, a generation of internationally trained winemakers has bet on native grapes - more than 300 of them - and the results compete with far more expensive bottles from famous regions.
What are Greece's main wine regions?
Santorini for volcanic Assyrtiko, Nemea in the Peloponnese for Agiorgitiko reds, and Naoussa in Macedonia for structured Xinomavro. Beyond those three: hundreds of small appellations and island vineyards reviving local varieties.
Is retsina still a thing?
Yes, but it no longer defines Greek wine. The pine-resined style buried Greece's reputation for decades; today it's a small niche - some of it genuinely good - while the country's native dry wines carry the flag.
Does Big Hammer Wines carry Greek wine?
