Mirafiori Winery is a 300-acre Bionatural Reserve in the beautiful Serralunga d'Alba, at the core of the renowned Barolo region, right there with iconic producers like Giacomo Conterno or Roberto Voerzio, where Barolos can often exceed $300.
It dates back to over 160 years. In the 19th century, a nobleman with a modern vision, Emanuele Alberto Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore, son of Italy's first King, embarked on a remarkable wine journey. He founded Casa E. di Mirafiore, a winery that aimed not only to craft exceptional wines but also to create a thriving village. This village, a real community, housed 250 people, all employed by the winery. Even today, 15 families call it home. Every corner of this place tells a unique story, making it Italy's first storytelling village.
Casa E. di Mirafiore has always been ahead of its time. Since 2018, it has proudly been recognized as an Organic Estate. With vineyards in the Barolo and Fontanafredda subzones, it exclusively produces wines from its estate-owned vineyards, including the renowned Barolo DOCG crus Lazzarito and Paiagallo.
2016 was an epic year for this region. Vinous Media blessed this vintage with a 98-point review and said: "Two thousand sixteen is an extraordinary vintage full of tremendous wines. Perhaps more importantly, average quality is exceptionally high."
If you love Barolo, but you're not keen on waiting for those tannic wines to come around, that's where Langhe Nebbiolo comes into play.
If you want to experience all the delight and essence that Nebbiolo has to offer without the wait, look no further.
Langhe Nebbiolo wines are often overlooked and underestimated, but they offer genuine value in a world where Nebbiolo prices, including Barbaresco and Barolo, are soaring to new heights. The 2016 Casa E Di Mirafiore Langhe Nebbiolo truly knocks it out of the park.
Aging: 12 months in oak barrels.
100% Nebbiolo. The color is garnet-red with ruby shades, and its nose shows nutmeg, tobacco, dried leaves, mussel, plum, and tamarind with traces of withered flowers such as rose. "I love finding and drinking wines like this. This is what locals are drinking in Turin and the area surrounding Barolo. So much attention is given to Barolo and Barbaresco, Langhe Nebbiolo is often a forgetten and underappreciated category. If you love the wines of NW Italy, you'll want to stock up on this wine." ~Greg Martellotto
~92 The Wine Front
A once-in-a-lifetime vintage is a time to strike at the lesser wines in the village, and this Langhe Nebbiolo is worth seeking out. The nose is pleasantly aromatic with a whiff of peppery spice, tobacco leaf, and earth. The color is Piedmont light red, with a touch of brick at the edge. But the money here is in the flavors. Intense, rich, and at the same time elegant, the wine dances across the palate, pitching red plums and roses. The tannins are almost sweet, blocking the dry notes, and pulling you through to the end of the wine. Beautifully balanced, it is a 20-year wine that will improve and improve. Well done. Pick your pasta and sauce. ~91 Anthony Gismondi
