About The Wine

"At Giscours, a wine does not live by itself. It is a reflection of the place, its environment, and the people who make it."

Just over 3 miles away from world-renowned Château Margaux, is located Château Giscours a 3rd Growth Classified Châteaux. The history of this estate dates back nearly 700 years.

It was seized in the French Revolution and sold to Americans before the turn of the 19th century. It then changed hands many times while slowly falling into disrepair. It wasn’t until Nicolas Tari purchased the estate in 1954 that it started to make an upward trend. The real step toward living up to its classification is when Alexander van Beek took over as the managing director. He replanted much of the vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and even moved the harvesting back to hand picking. Around the 2000 vintage, this estate really started producing top-tier wines.

Chateau Giscours's terroir is impressive, as you could have imagined, being located in one of the finest terroirs in the Bordeaux region. Its dry and meager gravel soils result in charming and delicate wines like the 2016 Chateau Giscours Margaux.

If you want to taste the real power and elegance of Bordeaux, this wine is for you. Collectors would be fortunate to have this wine in their cellar.

The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is already considered one of the great modern years — classical structure, vibrant acidity, age-worthy tannins. Vinous Media awarded this year with a 98-point review and said: "The 2016s are absolutely remarkable wines." The drinking window is opening now and will stretch comfortably to 2045 and beyond. Decant 60–90 minutes; serve in a Bordeaux glass; reward it with the right meal.

Aging: 17 months in French oak barrels, 50% new.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Herbs, olives, currants, fine spices and touches of bergamot and tobacco on the nose. On the palate it’s juicy and fine-veined, with a medium body, very fine tannins and a super-long, filigreed finish. 81% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot. Such balance. Great now, but this will benefit from further aging. For those who love classic left-bank finesse and precision, this is the vintage to buy. Drink or hold". ~97 James Suckling

"This nearly 200-acre estate lies in the south of the Margaux appellation. The wine is another great success in a series of superb years. It is rich but the structure and finely textured fruit give it style and longevity. Drink the wine from 2026. (RV)" ~96 Wine Enthusiast

"The 2016 Giscours is built around 81% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a wonderful bouquet with pure blackberry, crushed violet and mineral scents, with exquisite delineation and poise. The palate is framed by fine tannins and a perfect line of acidity. Slightly grainy in texture, it boasts gentle grip, yet there is real intensity and focus here. The 2016 is only just beginning to open and should be cellared for several years." ~95 Vinous Media

"Concentrated autumnal fruit offers a hawthorny bramble of blackberry and bilberry. Big-framed, muscular tannins are joined by plenty of acidity - it's very clearly built to last and confident in its ability to reward those with patience. Matured in 50% new oak. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consult. Drinking Window 2026 - 2045." ~94 Decanter
