“Grassi is one of my favorite under-the-radar producers in Napa Valley. The estate excels with both Ribolla Gialla – a white grape native to Italy’s Friuli – and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all, the wines remain very fairly priced considering the quality of what is in the glass.”~ Vinous
Grassi is a family-operated winery in Napa Valley. Situated just south of the esteemed Stags Leap District AVA, the sprawling fourteen-acre property nurtures five acres of prized Cabernet Sauvignon and Ribolla Gialla grapes. This land has been a cherished home for three generations of Grassis over two decades.
Founded by Mark and Jami Grassi in 2005, the winery is now led by their daughter, Cassandra, alongside her husband, Miguel Luna. Miguel manages the vineyards, and together, they bring life to this family legacy, with their children Valentina and Carlo adding youthful energy.
The mastermind behind these wines is the acclaimed Israeli winemaker Maayan Koschitzky. His journey includes working at prestigious places like Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle back in 2011. Since 2014, he's teamed up with the rockstar winemaker Phillipe Melka, becoming partners in this venture. Nowadays, Maayan also lends his expertise to consult for wineries such as Lail Vineyards, Roy Estate, and Seavey Vineyard, solidifying his impact in the wine world.
The 2018 Grassi Estate Cabernet Sauvignon captures the essence of Napa Valley. It's a wine with remarkable depth and character. With multiple scores above 90 and a nod from Eric Asimov at The New York Times, this wine is truly exceptional.
Grassi estate wines are proudly served at some of the finest restaurants in Napa and beyond. These include PRESS restaurant in St. Helena, known for having an extensive collection of Napa Valley wines; Bottega in Yountville; TORC in downtown Napa; the renowned 3-star Michelin restaurant Single Thread in Sonoma County; and even Il Buco in the vibrant city of New York.
2018 was an iconic year for Napa Valley. Wine Spectator blessed this vintage with a 99-point review and said it was a "spectacular year, with wines that are rich and dark, but detailed, restrained in style, and very terroir-driven."
Aging: 20 months in 100% French oak, 60% new oak.
Tasting Notes:
87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc. Red and black fruit on the nose with a hint of French oak. On the palate, it has a mid+ body, great acidity, and fresh notes mixed with notes of cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. Firm tannins hold the wine tight with a long finish. The wine is showing well and will age for 15+ years.
~96 Points, Owen Bargreen's Wine Guide.
