About The Wine

Most people have never heard of Immortal Estate, and that's the whole reason to pay attention. It's the reborn Hidden Ridge site: a terraced Cabernet vineyard pitched at 55 degrees in the high Mayacamas, on the Sonoma flank of the same ridgeline that made Napa's Spring Mountain famous. Same mountain, quieter address — and a mountain Cabernet that drinks like the neighborhood it hides behind.

Winemaker Tim Milos came up through Opus One, Stag's Leap, and Cliff Lede before taking the reins here, and it shows in the glass. The 2018 is almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon with a whisper of Petit Verdot, fermented long on the skins, raised mostly in new French oak, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. It's dense and unmistakably mountain-grown but never clumsy — dark brambly fruit layered with sweet spice, tobacco, and cocoa, with tannins that start firm and relax into velvet about an hour after you pull the cork.

This is a special-occasion bottle built for the cellar as much as the table. Decant it, pour it next to a ribeye or a rack of lamb, and if you're buying young vintages, give them time — there are decades in front of this wine.

97.5% Cabernet Sauvignon with 2.5% Petit Verdot. Black fruit and sweet spice on the nose — boysenberry, blackberry cordial, violets, fresh leather, and tobacco leaf. The palate is full and dense, carrying spice cake, brown sugar, black tea, clove, cocoa, and espresso over well-ripened mountain tannins that turn supple with air. Long, polished finish. Accessible young, but structured to evolve for decades.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Layers of opulent aromatics lift from the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Slope with fresh leather, boysenberry liqueur, violets, and fresh tobacco leaf. Full-bodied, with fully ripe tannins, a velvety texture, and a long finish, this is a bold expression with a luxurious polished feel. It has quite a bit of immediate appeal but has the structure to improve and develop over the next 15-20 years. Drink 2024-2044. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck
