About the Wine
“The Veneto is its own vinous nation; it has the volume and the quality to stand on its own outside the context of Italian wine. One wine that shines particularly bright in the Veneto is the mighty Amarone, where “It is king,” made from only the best varietals in the region.” ~ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
Located right in the heart of the magical Valpolicella region, is the old and famous Marchesi Fumanelli winery. Since 1470, the Fumanelli family began their wine story with the plantation of its first vines, which until today, have been focused on the production of Amarone.
Marchesi Fumanelli boasts 28 generations of winegrowing expertise. The Squarano Estate, just eight miles from Verona, is surrounded by stunning cypress and cherry trees. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the estate is steeped in history, sitting amidst ancient Roman ruins, including a temple dedicated to the goddess Flora.
Current CEO, Armando Fumanelli, returned to the family estate in 1998 after a global career. His modern touch, including restoring the 15th-century cellars, has elevated the estate's reputation for exceptional Valpolicella wines.
Aging: 30 months in French oak tonneaux and a further 8 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella. An intense garnet red color. The wine displays typical fragrances of mature cherries and wild berry, with elegant hints of sweet spices, cinnamon, tobacco, and chocolate. A wine of great structure, it is rich, rounded, soft, and velvety. Powerful yet elegant style showing lots of ripe baked red fruits. Full-bodied with firm, structured tannins. Warm on the palate, with very long finish.
Reviews
A rich perfume of dark plums, crushed black currants, dried leaves and a whisper of cinnamon and clove all swirl together in the glass. The palate is rewarded with a round mouthfeel, showcasing smooth tannins and a ripe, berry-driven nose dappled by warmed sweet and savory spices, new leather and forest floor with a finish that speaks to the time-honored winemaking traditions of the region. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
Rich ruby red with purple highlights, almost impenetrable. A bit restrained on the nose, with air there is blueberry and white chocolate. Balanced on the palate, subtly fruity-sweet, prominent tannins and refreshing acidity, juicy finish. ~92 Falstaff
Round and creamy, this juicy red is defined by chewy tannins and features flavors of baked cherry, sandalwood and chocolate shavings, plus hints of loamy earth and smoke. Well-spiced and lingers on the fragrant finish. Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella. Drink now through 2028. 40,000 cases made, 1,198 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator
A very fresh rendition of Amarone with clean red berries and some peppery spice. But there’s little sign of dried fruit on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, lightly firm tannins and a crisp, clean and fruity finish. Drink or hold. ~90 James Suckling
