Fattoria Le Pupille takes advantage of a unique growing area in the southern reaches of Tuscany. This growing site is regularly cooled by a cool breeze that rolls off the Mediterranean. This bottle shows all the potential that a cooler climate Cabernet-based wine can achieve.
Le Pupille is a reference to the estates that lie on the property, they have been referred to as the pupils since first being built. Today these two buildings have their backs turned to the medieval village Pereta. For long years there were no vineyards in the area, but cork oaks, wheat, Mediterranean woods, the most classical scenery of a Maremma landscape of former days. It was Fattoria Le Pupille under the guidance of Elisabetta Geppetti that had the forethought and dedication to express this terroir to its fullest potential.
Elisabetta Geppetti has given her life to bring forth a dream, thanks to her tenacious character and the enthusiasm of her youth, which are now, after 30 years, the traits that characterize her best. It is also thanks to her entrepreneurial ability, which has allowed her to build one of the most important wineries in Tuscany. They call her the Lady of Morellino and the Ambassador of Maremma. She has been the first woman to be the president of a consortium in 1992, the year of the foundation of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium. The german headliner Der Feinschmecker proclaimed her ‘Wine-maker of the year’ a few years back.
Aging: 18 months in new barriques.
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby color with purple reflections. It shows pronounced flavors of black fruits like blackcurrant and black cherry along with spicy aromas of cloves, cinnamon, and licorice. The palate has a generous velvety texture with round tannins and a return of the fruit for a long and persistent finish.
So much crushed stone, rosemary, lavender, mint, and blackberry. Full-bodied and very structured with layers of powerful and polished tannins. It goes on for minutes. Ink, blackcurrants, and blueberries. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 5% petit verdot. Needs at least five or six years to open. Try after 2025. ~99 James Suckling.
This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot is explosive. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has been slightly increased in this vintage (and we can expect the same in the warm 2020 vintage that saw the percentage of Merlot further reduced). This 2019 expression boasts a very compact and powerful quality of fruit with deep intensity, thick layering, and a velvety texture. This is a real beauty that should be put aside for a few more years of aging. ~97+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
A deep, polished red, whose black currant, blackberry, plum, violet and oak spice aromas and flavors mesh well with the dense structure, showing terrific length. Very focused and balanced, this needs a few years to integrate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2037. 3,000 cases made, 1,400 cases imported. ~96 Wine Spectator, #8 Top 100 Wines of 2022
A fantastic nose to this with currant, sage, rosemary, and rose-petal character. Sweet tobacco and spicy chocolate, too. Very complex. The palate shows a lovely depth of fruit with blackberries, blackcurrants, and fine tannins. It’s racy and refined with a direct, focused palate. Just a baby. ~97 James Suckling.
The 2018 Saffredi is a regal, elegant, supremely polished wine. It may very well be the most refined Saffredi I have ever tasted. Silky in its first impression, with striking aromatic presence and exceptional balance, the 2018 is a total knock-out. Sweet red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, and cinnamon accents develop over time, but it is the wine’s overall balance and poise that is so impressive today. The 2018 is an absolutely gorgeous Saffredi. It spent 20 months in French oak barrels, about 65% new. Don’t miss it. ~96+ Vinous Media.
The Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Saffredi borrows quite a bit from all of the grapes that make up the blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot). These balanced results open to a round bouquet of dark fruit, black cherry, and plum. As the wine warms in the glass, it shows spice, cured tobacco, and campfire embers. This is a full-bodied expression, but not excessively so. It puts forth immediate elegance with carefully measured tannins and a fitting postscript of fresh acidity. This newest vintage of Saffredi should be hitting the market now, but if you buy it, you should plan on cellaring it. ~96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
