About the Wine
Caliterra is located in Colchagua Valley, one of the largest and most active regions in all of Chile. This winery was founded in 1996 when two of the strongest household names in the wine industry joined forces: The American Mondavi family, and the Chilean Errázuriz family. They shared a dream: To produce wines of the highest quality and friendly to the environment.
Caliterra's name comes "Calidad" (quality) and the "Tierra" (land) of Chile. Since its inception, this winery has had an enormous focus on sustainability, for the land, for the environment, and for the people. The vineyard is 100% sustainable certified, and there’s a strong commitment with the Valley’s community to restore knowledge and education to its workers and their families.
The vineyard of Caliterra is located in one of the largest and oldest wine regions in the country, The Rapel Valley. The Mediterranean climate in Colchagua is ideal for wine growing, where its close-the-equator warmth is tempered by the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. It’s here that grapes like Merlot, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, and Viognier thrive in the granite-enriched soils on the slopes surrounding the valley’s foothills that benefit from the silt and clay that wash down from the surrounding Andes.
The Caliterra vineyard is a protected and privileged sub-valley, covering over 2,500 acres of which 75% remain intact. The great diversity of soils, heights, and exposure to the sun of the vineyard make this terroir a unique place to produce elegant, structured, and balanced wines.
The mastermind behind Caliterra’s wines is Alberto Eckholt, a passionate Chilean winemaker who has forged his expertise in iconic wineries in Chile, France, and USA, including Montes Winery in Chile, Napa Angel in Napa Valley, and Star Angel in Paso Robles.
Aging: 6 months in French oak used barrels (30%)
Tasting Notes: 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot. A bright ruby red Cabernet Sauvignon with bluish hues. Very intense and fresh on the nose, it shows aromas of violet flowers and blackberries along with spicy notes such as white pepper and tobacco leaves that make it very complex. On the palate, its structure is rich and well-balanced, with fresh fruit flavors and vibrant acidity that stand out. This is a wine ready to drink and enjoy.
