About The Wine

Just over 2 miles from the acclaimed Chateau Cheval Blanc is Grand Mayne, a Grand Cru Classé Chateau within the Wine and Saint-Emilion Classification.

Chateau Grand Mayne is a property with a large original castle from the 16th century. Those responsible for the construction of this magnificent and important castle were its first owners, the Laveau family.

Thanks to the acquisition of the Chateau by the Nony family in 1934, the property was revolutionized, starting with the vineyard to the wine cellar. Currently, the property is managed by Jean-Antoine Nony, who has contributed greatly to the quality of the wine and has as its purpose the continuous improvement of the Chateau.

Grand Mayne has passed through the hands of renowned winemakers and currently, Rockstar Michelle Rolland is in charge. Michel Rolland, known as the “Spielberg of Wine,” is a consultant in more than 13 countries around the world including some of the most recognized Chateaux in France.

Chateau Grand Mayne has 42 acres of vineyards with 30-year-old vines, 78% with Merlot, 19% with Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon planted in clay and limestone soils.

The 2019 Chateau Grand Mayne boasts a beautifully defined bouquet of black cherry, blueberry, crushed violet, and mineral notes. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine definition, crisp acidity, and touches of dark chocolate on the elegant finish. Flavors of black cherries, new leather, dried herbs, and Asian spices create a layered, complex profile. Silky tannins and a vibrant, mineral quality contribute to its finesse. This wine is already impressive but will continue to evolve beautifully with time.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2019 Grand Mayne has a beautifully defined, pure bouquet of black cherry, blueberry, crushed violet and mineral aromas. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, crisp acidity and touches of dark chocolate toward the finish, which displays both power and elegance. This is a superb Grand Mayne courtesy of Jean-Antoine Nony. ~95 Neal Martin, Vinous Media

The 2019 Chateau Grand Mayne showed brilliantly. Very much in the more elegant, classic style of the vintage, it's medium to full-bodied and straight and focused on the palate, yet brings plenty of mid-palate depth as well as ripe, polished tannins. Black cherries, new leather, dried herbs, and Asian spice notes all define the bouquet, and this is going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

Floral, earthy, smoky, and racy, the wine exudes class and charm with its layers of medium-bodied, soft, fresh, pure, silky, vibrant, mineralistic, red berries. Vibrant and refined, with length and complexity, this is so good now and it is only going to get better with age. This is a clear contender for the best vintage of Grand Mayne ever produced! Drink from 2024-2042. ~94 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

This has a perfumed, pretty nose of dried violets, cloves, blackberries, chocolate cherries and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied with firm, fine and powdery tannins. Mouth-coating and expansive, with sweet spice to close. Drink after 2024. ~93 James Suckling

The clay-limestone soils here are cool, which often means the tannins are fairly bristling in their youth, and it takes its time to unravel in the bottle before drinking. There is an excellent structure and highly attractive smoked liquorice and toffee notes when you sit with it long enough for the fruit-acid-tannin combination to soften up. Good quality and enjoyable. ~92 Jane Anson
