2019 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the renowned Stags Leap District. The winery was first recognized for its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon at the famed Judgment of Paris in 1976, establishing its place as one of Napa Valley’s most iconic winery estates. The Cabernet from this estate upset the French Bordeaux competitors at the French Culinary Institute Tasting of 1986. Still family-owned today, Clos Du Val farms 350 acres of estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, Carneros, and Yountville appellations and continues to craft wines of balance and complexity, showcasing the fruit from the outstanding terroir on which our estate lies.

Following heavy rainfall in the winter season, the 2019 harvest was mild with only a few heat spikes. Due to these ideal weather conditions, the wine’s flavor was able to develop on the vine for an extended period of time, resulting in powerful and impeccably balanced wines.

"Based on early tastings from barrel, the 2019s are fabulous. The wines feel like they have a little more energy, power, and depth than the 2018s. I imagine much of that has to do with smaller berries and higher skin-to-juice ratios. That extra kick of late heat seems to have given the wines just enough added concentration to fill out their frames. Acidities, though, are on the lower side, so the perception is of wines that are both rich and energetic. In some ways, 2019 reminds me of 2010, but not as extreme. It is a highly promising vintage"

Aging: 16 months in 44% new French oak

Tasting Notes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Enticing aromas of blackberry, plum, and raspberry leap from the glass with underlying notes of caramel, dark chocolate, and rose petal. Fresh and vibrant flavors of cherry, pomegranate, nutmeg, and vanilla are seamlessly integrated with bright acidity, polished tannins, and a long, velvety finish.
