About The Wine

Meet a Napa Cab like no other. Crafted by J. Derek Beitler—yes, from that winemaking family (Caymus, anyone?)—this is a Cabernet you’ll want to pay attention to. Derek brings his expertise and passion into every bottle, and this 2019 vintage is a standout.

This wine is only produced on best vintages and in 2019 only 120 cases were made, with meticulous care. A five-day cold soak, natural malolactic fermentation, and 50% new French oak barrels give this wine its luxurious texture and depth. Three years of aging on lees make it beautifully smooth.

J. Derek Beitler, winemaker and owner of JDB Wines (and maker of this Napa Cab) comes from a winemaking family that’s as well regarded as any in Napa. You may have heard of his uncle, Charlie Wagner, founder of Caymus. His brother owns Bohème in Sonoma.

Derek does not rest on the successes of his family, though. He spent his summers working at Caymus while in college and continues the pursuit of perfection in crafting his namesake wines. He now owns two wineries—Carne Humana Winery in Napa which he founded with his cousin Joey Wagner in 2010. But before that, he started his solo venture, JDB Wines, in 2007.

When someone who cut his teeth in the wine business at Caymus makes a Napa Cab, you pay attention. That’s a good thing because the this wine deserves your attention.

This isn’t just any Cab—this is Napa royalty in a bottle, crafted by a winemaker who knows his stuff. Small production, big impact. Grab it while you can!

2019 was a fabulous year for Napa Valley. Wine Spectator awarded this year a 97-point score, and Vinous Media gave it 96 points saying that "The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets have turned out beautifully. 2019 is a very high-quality vintage of Cabernets that will be easy to drink and enjoy with minimal cellaring. The extra kick of late heat softened the tannins, making the wines a pleasure to taste and drink."

Aging: 3 years in French oak barrels (50% new)

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Showcases a deep ruby hue with aromas of vanilla, mocha, dried red and black fruits, and hints of leather and oak. On the palate, it reveals rich flavors of dark cherry, and dark chocolate, firm tannins and a lingering finish of black tea and oak. This bold Napa Cab pairs beautifully with grilled rib eye, lamb chops, or aged cheddar, making it a perfect match for hearty, flavorful dishes.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Massif is produced by Derek Beitler, whose Cortina Series aims to highlight wines grown in Rutherford's gravelly, sandy loam Cortina soils, which impart unique mineral characteristics to this 2019 Massif. Expressive notes of blackcurrants, kirsch, and bay laurel leap from the glass, accompanied by spiced plums. Fine-grained, mineral-laced, chalky tannins make their mark on the mid-palate, resolving with nuances of leather, sandalwood, and vanilla bean. Rich and deliciously satisfying. ~93 Decanter Magazine

Burnt sienna color. Boozy, herbal, candied, confected, fruity aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate, black currant, and toast with a round, vibrant, dryish full body and a warming, medium-long macerated cherry, mocha, date, and french toast finish with fine, well-integrated tannins and moderate oak flavor. A juicy, full bodied, nicely balanced Cabernet with ample oak that is very pleasurable now and be even better with a few years of cellaring. ~ 93 Testings.com
