About the Wine

Elie de Bétoulaud's dream was to create a wine estate that mirrored the splendor, eccentricity, and joy of Versailles. Situated in the heart of the Saint-Émilion wine region, Château de Ferrand offers exceptional views of the Dordogne valley and boasts a mild climate, making it the perfect canvas for his admiration.

Below the chateau lie Ferrand's mysterious lyre-shaped caves, transformed by Elie de Bétoulaud into a display of curiosities. These caves held fossils, rare shells, and sculptures, where knowledgeable guests could identify figures such as Hercules, Caesar, Augustus, Mars, and, of course, Louis XIV. This place is a must-visit!

In the late 1970s, Château de Ferrand found new ownership when Baron Bich, a visionary industrialist, declared his intention to "turn water into wine." Today, Ferrand is managed by Baron Bich's daughter, Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët, and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët. Under their leadership, the estate has seen a resurgence in momentum, blending respect for tradition with a commitment to innovation.

Since 2010, Château de Ferrand has undergone significant improvements, including vineyard restructuring, revamped cultivation methods, and modernized cellars. This dedication to sustainable winemaking has elevated the wine's quality, leading to its recognition as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé in 2012.

At Ferrand, nature and history are intertwined. The estate's commitment to sustainability encompasses all aspects of its operations, from the vineyards to the chateau itself.

2020 was an outstanding year for Bordeaux. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 98-point review and said, "Two thousand-twenty is an exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is exceptionally high among the great wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol."

Aging: 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 74% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Crystalline with a dazzling nose. On the palate, it offers beautiful balance and incredible freshness, heralding huge potential. There are also some lovely nuances with floral and red fruit notes. It has a velvety mouthfeel with fresh, silky tannins. Château de Ferrand 2020 is a sophisticated wine with a subtle balance and a beautiful richness of aromas.

Reviews

Very beautiful wine with deep, creamy richness and well-manicured tannins that are soft and very long. Lots of subtle flavors of blackberry and plum with some dark chocolate. Same quality level as the 2019. ~94-95 James Suckling

I think the 2020 Château De Ferrand will be an outstanding wine. Offering pretty, complex notes of black cherries, mulberries, sandalwood, and leather, it has a kiss of obvious minerality (classic Saint-Emilion), medium-bodied richness, good overall freshness, and the purity of fruit that’s the hallmark of this notable vintage. ~90-92 Jeb Dunnuck
