About the Wine
Ever since Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, and Michael Imperioli brought to life memorable characters in the HBO hit show “White Lotus”, Sicily and Sicilian wines have been on fire. None more than Planeta, a winery that’s featured in the show.
Planeta is one of the most iconic, and well-known producers in Sicily.
Alessio Planeta, head of Planeta, has been named "Winemaker of the Year" worldwide by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine through their "Wine Star Awards" in 2023.
The family history of this Sicilian Estate goes back for more than 5 centuries, where in such a closed and traditional culture, the Planeta family is not afraid to innovate and modernize. Diego Planeta along with other top-notch wine consultants from Italy like Giacomo Tachis, Carlo Corino, Giampaolo Fabris, and Attilio Scienza, have managed to position Planeta as the reference point in Sicilian and Italian winemaking. Discover what makes Planeta one of Sicily's leading producers!
Their vineyards are distributed throughout 5 different regions around Sicily: Menfi, Etna, Vittoria, Noto, and Capo Milazzo, resulting in an incredibly interesting wine portfolio: Different soils, different climates, different grapes, different (and incredible) wines! And if that wasn't enough, the family also owns a hotel and a restaurant in Menfi and Palermo.
For Planeta, sustainability is of the utmost importance, winemaking practices and viticulture are done in accordance with the environment and society.
Tasting Notes
100% Syrah. Syrah loves hot and dry growing regions (think Southern Rhone in France). This grape thrives in Sicily, too.
Critic Reviews
This is rich, mellow and nicely filled with fruit, offering dark cherries, plums, mild spices and hints of cedar and nutmeg on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with velvety, rather supple tannins and impressive volume and length. A smooth and fruity aftertaste. Drink now or hold. ~92 James Suckling
There's a broad-shouldered feel to this integrated red, with sculpted tannins enmeshed with flavors of creamed black cherry, tarry smoke, dried mint, dill and vanilla. Opens nicely on the creamy palate before expanding through the spice- and graphite-laced finish. Drink now through 2035. 25,000 cases made, 60 cases imported. ~92 Wine Spectator
Darkly floral, the 2020 Maroccoli, 100% Syrah, lifts from the glass with a smoky blend of grilled herbs, dried violets and crushed blackberries. This is wonderfully fresh and lifted in style, with bright wild berry fruits and juicy acidity that maintains fantastic energy. It finishes with a pleasantly bitter sensation, tapering off with medium length and a spicy tinge. ~92 Vinous Media
