About The Wine

Amarone is one of Italy's most distinctive wines — a bold, concentrated red born from air-dried grapes, a tradition that transforms the fruit of Valpolicella into something richer, darker, and more profound. Poggi Castaldi puts that mastery on display here, sourcing fruit from their estate vineyards in San Pietro Cariano, where mineral-rich soils give the wine its backbone.

The grapes — Corvina and Rondinella — are hand-harvested and hand-selected, then dried in barns for four months starting in late September. It's the appassimento process: the bunches shrivel into raisins, concentrating sugar, alcohol, and a world of flavor. After fermentation, the wine rests in lightly toasted barrels for a minimum of two years, smoothing the edges without dulling the intensity.

The 2020 vintage delivers a brooding, fragrant red with menthol and medicinal herb aromas, backed by intense notes of cherry jam, coffee beans, fruitcake, and chocolate. The palate is robust — ripe red berries, firm tannins, a supple texture, and a lingering finish. Broad, warming, and full-bodied, it's the kind of wine that makes supermarket reds taste emotionally vacant.

This is $39.99 for a wine that drinks like it costs twice that. Amarone is usually a $70-plus play at retail. We taste 5,000 wines a year and buy 4%. This one made the cut because it punches above its price — and we're handing you the short list.

THE PRODUCER

Poggi

Azienda Agricola Poggi Giorgio, nestled in the historic Valpolicella Classico village of San Pietro in Cariano, is a celebrated family-run Italian estate best known for its prestigious Poggi Corte dei Castaldi wine label. By combining mineral-rich hillside vineyards with centuries-old Venetian winemaking traditions, the winery crafts exceptional, full-bodied red wines—most notably its Amarone Classico DOCG and Ripasso Classico Superiore. Utilizing native grapes like Corvina and Rondinella alongside the traditional appassimento process of slowly air-drying fruit on bamboo racks before oak barrel aging, Poggi produces intensely aromatic, complex wines defined by deep cherry notes, dried fruit complexity, and remarkable aging potential
