About the Wine
Barolo, often called the “King of Wines,” is known for its incredible aging potential, and this bottle is no exception.
Crafted by the rising powerhouse of Monforte d'Alba, Diego Conterno, a winemaker who’s reshaping the very soul of Barolo, one bottle at a time. You’re not just drinking history—you’re tasting the future of one of the greatest wine regions in the world.
‘Le Coste di Monforte’ is the kind of wine that demands attention. Grown at the edge of the Barolo zone, where the altitude and cool temperatures let Nebbiolo do its thing in the purest form. It’s bold. It’s complex. And it’s got that wow factor that only comes when you’ve spent years perfecting your craft. Diego’s vineyard sits at the highest reaches of the zone—where those cool, alpine winds keep the wine fresh, while the sun ensures it’s full of character, depth, and ripeness.
But it’s not just the location. It’s the passion, the craftsmanship, and the vision. Diego and his son Stefano aren’t just making wine—they’re telling a story with every bottle. With ‘Le Coste,’ they’ve created a wine that’s as powerful as it is graceful. This wine has all the elegance you crave from Barolo, but with a twist. It’s rich, layered, and powerful but never in-your-face. The use of large oak casks (botti) and cement fermentation tanks lets this wine show off its true character—pure, natural, and without compromise. And let’s not forget the organic farming—Diego and Stefano have been committed to it since 2010, and their dedication shines through in every glass.
‘Le Coste di Monforte’ isn’t just another bottle to open. It’s a wine that’ll make you sit back and think, This is what Barolo is all about. From the first sip to the last, this is a wine that speaks to the heart of what great Barolo should be—classic, refined, but with a personality all its own.
Tasting Notes
100% Nebbiolo. The 2021 Diego Conterno Barolo 'Le Coste di Monforte' is a thrilling ride of dark cherry, plum, and floral notes, wrapped in earthy minerality. Bold yet refined, its ripe tannins and bright acidity create a perfectly balanced structure, with a long, spicy finish that lingers with elegance and power. A true expression of Monforte’s best.
Critical Reviews
The 2021 Barolo ‘Le Coste di Monforte’ is a similar deep ruby red color and steps things up a notch with notes of toasted cedar, tobacco, dried cherries, leather, and balsamic herbs. The palate has fantastic purity and a compact and focused liqueur-like feel, with profound depth and the potential to improve with age. There’s a lot going on here, and the work of Diego and Stefano Conterno is really paying off in spades. Drink 2027-2057. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck
In the far southern confines of the denomination, Le Coste di Monforte is a relatively cool, windy site on a steep, southeast-facing ridge, and it has become a bit of a hub for rising stars like Diego Conterno. The estate’s 2021 has a slightly wild and rugged yet thrilling edge. Spicy macerated cherry takes on territorial scents of toasted hazelnut and truffle. The palate is layered with quite imposing, dense red fruit and chalky tannins, relaxing just enough to allow appetising medicinal herbs to take over on the finish. ~94 Decanter
