About The Wine

If you know Nebbiolo, you know Vietti. And if you don’t—this is where you begin.

These are not just wines. They are time capsules of terroir, sculpted with precision and reverence by one of Italy’s most iconic estates. Vietti’s single-vineyard expressions are must-haves for any serious collector—delivering Grand Cru-level quality at a fraction of what you'd pay in Burgundy.

“Vietti makes some of the cleanest, most terroir-driven wines in Piedmont, with a rare subtlety and elegance.” ~ Wine Spectator

Founded in the 1800s, Vietti’s destiny changed forever in 1960 when Luciana Vietti married Alfredo Currado—one of the founding fathers of modern Barolo. Alfredo’s legacy is legend: he was among the first to bottle Barolo by cru, showcasing the individuality of Piedmont’s grand vineyards long before it became fashionable.

Luca Currado, Vietti’s former winemaker, brought a résumé that reads like a global wine hall of fame—Opus One, Mouton Rothschild, Simi—before returning to his roots to craft wines that Forbes has called “some of the finest Italian wine labels.” Under his leadership, Vietti earned its place among the “25 Best Barolo Producers” in the world.

Continuing this legacy, Eugenio Palumbo, with over 23 years at Vietti, has been instrumental in the winery’s success. After the Krause family took over in 2016, Eugenio expanded the estate with sought-after Barolo and Barbaresco Crus and launched the Derthona Timorasso project. Today, he builds on Vietti’s rich heritage, crafting wines that combine tradition with innovation.

These wines are pure, poised, and profoundly expressive. They are, quite simply, what Nebbiolo was always meant to be. Own a piece of Barolo history.

Here's what's in the glass: 100% Nebbiolo, drawn from more than 20 separate vineyard parcels across the Barolo zone and blended into one wine. That's the old-school "Barolo Classico" idea. Instead of bottling a single famous cru at triple the price, Vietti assembles the best of many sites into something balanced and complete. New to Nebbiolo? Think structure and perfume over sheer fruit: rose, tar, red cherry, and a tannic grip built for the dinner table, not the couch. 2021 is a vintage the critics have lined up behind.

100% Nebbiolo. Ruby with a garnet edge. The nose leads with rose petal, tar, and red cherry, picking up sweet violet, cinnamon, and a dusty, earthy undertone as it opens. Medium-to-full bodied, with lifted acidity and dense, velvety tannins that stay polished rather than harsh. Red fruit, dried herb, and a chalky mineral grip carry a long, tightening finish. Built to drink from 2027 and hold well beyond.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"A graceful wine with cinnamon, earth, strawberries, sweet violets and leesy complexity. There is a lot of fruit depth, with a full body, lifted acidity and dense, ripe, velvety tannins. The finish is polished yet tight. Drinkable now, but best from 2027." ~95 James Suckling

"The 2021 Barolo Castiglione is a superb entry-level Barolo from Vietti. Rich, deep and layered in the glass, the 2021 offers tons of near- and medium-term appeal. The blend of sites is compelling. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, menthol, and licorice are all beautifully amplified. In 2021, the Castiglione approaches the level of the crus, and that is saying something." ~94 Vinous Media

The 2021 Barolo Castiglione is a ruby red color and is floral on the nose, opening to perfumed aromas of roses, fresh cherries, sweet herbs, and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, it has a lovely structure and is very well-balanced, and I love the apricot-noted fruit on the finish. The fruit is more present than in the 2020 version of the same wine. A fantastic vintage for this entry-level wine, I love it already and would be happy to grab a few cases to enjoy over the coming 15 years. (Moving forward, due to newly implemented labeling restrictions, they are going to remove “Castiglione” from the front label, and it will only be on noted the back label.) ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

"Elegantly lifted aromas dance between depth and delicacy, as red fruits and mixed flowers float above subtle herbal undertones. The palate tells its story through balsamic notes and bright acidity, while finely structured tannins provide graceful framework. The finish remains buoyant and fresh, concluding with an engaging savory narrative that beckons another sip. Drink Now - 2045" ~92 Wine Enthusiast
