About the Wine
Born in a Napa garage and perfected in a hidden canyon, Merus has pursued exceptional wine with fearless precision since 1998. What began as a two-car “garage wine” quickly earned cult status for its intensity and elegance.
Beginning with its 1998 garage-rooted first vintage, Merus has sourced its fruit primarily from Coombsville and insisted on strict grower standards and small-lot crafting.
After William Foley acquired the brand in 2007, Merus found its home in a restored “ghost winery” on Napa’s east side — complete with 7,000 square feet of caves dedicated to small-lot perfection.
Working with top Napa growers, Merus hand-picks fruit from tiny parcels and ferments each lot separately, crafting only the most powerful, balanced blends. Less than half makes it into the final bottle — the rest doesn’t qualify.
Merus is Napa craftsmanship at its most obsessive and precise.
The Wine Independent described 2021 as a dream vintage in Napa Valley. Following an exceptionally dry winter, small berries and low yields produced wines of striking concentration, ripe tannins, and purity. A steady, sun-filled summer allowed perfect ripening, making 2021 one of Napa’s finest vintages of the century.
The 2021 Merus sets the standard for modern Napa Cabernet — bold, brooding, and beautifully structured. Concentrated yet graceful, it’s a wine built for the long game — powerful now, but destined to evolve over the next 15 to 25 years into something even more profound.
Tasting Notes
Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Its rich, mouth-coating texture reveals layers that unfold with every swirl: caramel, cherry, blueberry, and blackberry, laced with hints of cinnamon and fig.
Critical Reviews
Beautiful plum and blue fruits, sappy herbs, violets, and sandalwood notes all emerge from Merus's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, a deep purple-hued, ripe, sexy 2021. Despite all its upfront baby fat, it has a rock-solid underlying structure and is going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and should be long-lived. ~ 97 Jeb Dunnuck
This blend of mountain-grown and Coombsville district grapes yields a yummy, dark, and polished wine that’s a treat to drink now and will live long as well. With a deep, dark color, potent blackcurrant, blueberry, and cocoa aromas, and firm tannins, this is a great combo of power and polish. Best after 2028. ~ 96 James Suckling
The 2021 Merus is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak. This is a classic expression of Cabernet from Napa, polished and full-bodied, with a plush, silky texture and velvety yet firm tannins. Core aromas and flavors of blackberry and cherry are beautifully interwoven with fragrant dusty violets, lightly toasted cedarwood, green tobacco, dried sage, and a lingering thread of graphite on the finish. Incredibly attractive and appealing, this wine showcases youthful exuberance with the structure and poise to cellar gracefully for another decade or more. A fantastic effort from this vintage. ~ 96 Decanter
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of purchased fruit from Coombsville, Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain, and Yountville. Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot and aged in 100% new French oak for 25 to 26 months, it bursts with ebullient scents of vanilla and cassis. It's full-bodied and firmly structured, framed by firm tannins and has a long, mouthwatering finish that bodes well for the cellar. ~ 94 Robert Parker
Juicy and full-bodied, with dark plum and blackberry compote notes scored with black licorice and singed alder and backed by the ganache-accented finish. A pretty violet detail hangs in the background. Drink now through 2038. ~ 93 Wine Spectator
