About the Wine

If you think Merlot, you probably think Bordeaux's Right Bank, Pomerol, or California's softer, plum-driven bottles.

You're not thinking Patagonia — and that's exactly what makes this wine so exciting. The 45 Rugientes Merlot is Merlot at the literal edge of the earth, grown at 45°33' South in the windswept Sarmiento desert of Chubut, where the climate more closely resembles Champagne than Saint-Émilion. The result is something the wine world rarely sees: a Merlot with real structure, electrifying acidity, and a cool-climate character that surprises even seasoned drinkers.

Sourced from a single one-hectare plot (Plot 8) within Otronia's Paico Vineyard, the vines grow on sandy soils over clay subsoil of lacustrine origin — the ancient bed of Lake Musters. Winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia, named Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin MW, ferments in concrete vessels and ages the wine for 20 or more months in neutral French oak foudres and concrete, preserving freshness while adding textural depth. The 45 Rugientes name honors both the extreme 45-degree latitude and the roaring winds — "Rugientes" — that define life here.

Recognized as the Best Merlot in Argentina by Descorchados 2024 (94 Points), this is a wine that earns its accolades through sheer distinctiveness. Think of it as what Right Bank Bordeaux might taste like if planted in a cold desert with volcanic winds — earthy, spiced, balsamic, and persistently fresh. A wine that's easy to love and impossible to forget.

Tasting Notes

100% Merlot from organically farmed Paico Vineyard Plot 8, Sarmiento, Chubut, Patagonia. Fermented in concrete; aged 20+ months in French oak foudres and concrete vessels.

Medium-intensity red with earthy, lightly spiced aromas layered over a core of red fruit (cherry) — notes that unfold in waves. On the palate, the wine is supple and enveloping with a slightly oily texture and fine-grained tannins.

High, tense acidity gives it snap and lift, while flavors of cherry, red currant, and subtle balsamic and herbal notes carry through to the finish. Earthy and tertiary notes from aging appear in the background, adding complexity without weight. Fresh, complex, and distinctly Patagonian.

Critical Reviews

~95 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

There aren't many good merlots in Argentina, but this is one of them. It's very subtle in color—as subtle as a pinot noir—and has a delicious nose full of fresh red fruits. The palate is taut and built with firm tannins, while fruity and floral flavors spread out across the palate. After 20 months of aging in foudres, there's a slight oxidation here that suggests earthy notes, but don't pay any attention to them—what rules here are the fresh red fruits. For sweetbreads. ~ 94 Descorchados

The 2021 Merlot 45° Rugientes comes from Patagonia's southernmost vineyard, in Sarmiento, Chubut. Ruby-hued, it boasts aromas of cherry, cassis, dried flowers, and black tea. Dry and rich on the velvety palate, nicely-balanced acidity supports a uniquely long-lasting Argentine Merlot. ~ 93 Vinous Media

Bright medium ruby color. Very fresh aromatics full of red plums, red cherries and a touch of white pepper. Really fresh and tangy on the palate with bright acidity and a supple mid-palate. Medium-bodied, chalky and lively. Very pure and transparent. Drink now. ~ 93 James Suckling

Otronia winery vineyard landscape in Patagonia, Argentina, aerial view of structured vineyard plots with waterways and golden sunset over expansive terrain

Otronia

Patagonia, Argentina

Otronia is a pioneering winery located in the remote region of Sarmiento, Chubut, in Argentine Patagonia—widely considered one of the southernmost wine estates in the world.

Founded as an ambitious project by Alejandro Bulgheroni, it pushes the boundaries of viticulture by cultivating organic vineyards in extreme conditions marked by cold temperatures, fierce winds, and intense sunlight.

This unique environment produces wines with remarkable freshness, structure, and mineral precision, positioning Otronia as a benchmark for cool-climate, terroir-driven wines from one of the last frontiers of winemaking.
