In 1985, Pierre Gaillard walked away from one of the most famous cellars in France. He'd been part of the Guigal team that created La Turque — one of the legendary single-vineyard "La-La" Côte-Rôties people now pay hundreds for.

Then he left to buy steep, half-abandoned slopes around Malleval that nobody else wanted. That instinct built one of the Northern Rhône's benchmark estates.

Crozes-Hermitage is the Northern Rhône's largest red appellation, and its most underrated. It's where people who actually drink this region come to find honest 100% Syrah without the Hermitage price tag. Gaillard's grows on granite, then rests about a year in used oak — so the fruit and the pepper lead, never the barrel.

2021 was a cooler, classic year up north, and this bottle wears it well. Forget jammy. This is the fresher, more aromatic face of Syrah: white pepper, violets, cedar, and lifted red and blue fruit, with fine tannins and real acidity underneath. Medium-bodied and alive — the kind of red that wakes a plate of food up rather than flattening it.

Côte-Rôtie from this cellar isn't cheap. This is the same hand and the same region for the price of a weeknight red — the one I reach for when I want Northern Rhône Syrah without the invoice. Pour it with lamb or a peppercorn steak. It does exactly what a good Crozes is supposed to do.
