About The Wine

RIISE is the second act of Juan Mercado, the self-taught vintner who built Realm Cellars into one of Napa Valley's most coveted cult labels. Mercado founded RIISE in 2019 to produce world-class Rhône varietal and Tempranillo-based wines from Paso Robles — wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet.

The name itself encodes its meaning: the Roman numeral II woven into "RIISE" signals this as Mercado's deliberate second chapter, pursued on his own terms in a region he had long admired. Fruit comes from three estate properties — Shadow Canyon on York Mountain at 1,800 feet elevation, the Willow Creek-based Arbor Vineyard, and the hillside Heaton Vineyard — as well as several of the area's most sought-after vineyard sites.

The vineyards are overseen by top managers Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope, with the wines brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount. RIISE's winemaking philosophy is one of minimalism, with the vineyards and varietals given the chance to shine in their purest expressions — texture forms the backbone, and balance and grace are the goal.

The Doyen is RIISE's Grenache-led flagship, a name meaning "dean" or "elder" a nod to the grape's primacy in the Southern Rhône tradition. The 2021 Doyen blends 65% Grenache with 18% Mourvèdre and 17% Syrah, drawn from the Shadow Canyon, Catapult, and Paderewski vineyards.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Doyen is more Grenache-based and is mixed with 18% Mourvèdre and 17% Syrah that was mostly destemmed and raised in 25% new 500-liter barrels. Red and black fruits, toasted spice, pepper, and savory herb and floral notes all define this beauty, and it's full-bodied, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming from a blend of the Shadow Canyon, Catapult, and Paderewski vineyards, it has a beautiful mix of richness and elegance. It will stand toe-to-toe with the finest Southern Rhônes out there and should have 10-15 years of prime drinking. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck

Deep garnet-purple colored, it waltzes out with a gorgeous perfume of kirsch, red currant jelly, and juicy blackberries, leading to hints of candied violets, cinnamon stick, and forest floor. ~96 The Wine Palate

Spicy to the core, the 2021 Doyen opens with a dark mix of cedar shavings, dried orange peel, candle wax and clove. It is deeply textural, with silken waves of ripe red and blue fruits, all neatly balanced by a core of vibrant acidity. The senses are drenched in primary concentration as the 2021 Doyen moves into the savory spectrum, leaving nuances of cocoa and spice. This is a bit of a big boy but the balance within cannot be denied. ~94 Vinous Media

The 2021 Doyen is 65% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre and 17% Syrah, aged in predominately one-year-old 500-liter barrels. The nose is modern and flashy but retains a graceful, composed nuance, with black-fruited aromas accented by toasted tobacco, turned earth and fresh herbs. The palate is ripe, plush and seamless, but as with the nose, refrains from going over the top. The finish is long and layered, with clear delineation and refinement without feeling excessively uniform. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

RIISE Wines

RIISE is the second act of Juan Mercado, the self-taught vintner who built Realm Cellars into one of Napa Valley's most coveted cult labels. Founded in 2019 and set against the rugged terrain of Paso Robles, RIISE was conceived to produce world-class Rhône varietal and Tempranillo-based wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet.

Fruit is sourced from three estate properties — Shadow Canyon on York Mountain, the Willow Creek-based Arbor Vineyard, and the hillside Heaton Vineyard — alongside several of the region's most acclaimed sites, all overseen by viticulturists Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope, with wines brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount.

The name itself is a quiet declaration of intent: the Roman numeral II embedded in RIISE marks this as Mercado's deliberate second chapter, pursued on his own terms in a region he had long admired.
