About The Wine

RIISE is the second act of Juan Mercado, the self-taught vintner who built Realm Cellars into one of Napa Valley's most coveted cult labels.

Founded in 2019 and set against the rugged terrain of Paso Robles, RIISE was conceived to produce world-class Rhône varietal and Tempranillo-based wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet. Fruit is sourced from three estate properties — Shadow Canyon on York Mountain, the Willow Creek-based Arbor Vineyard, and the hillside Heaton Vineyard — alongside several of the region's most acclaimed sites, all overseen by viticulturists Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope, with wines brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount.

The name itself is a quiet declaration of intent: the Roman numeral II embedded in RIISE marks this as Mercado's deliberate second chapter, pursued on his own terms in a region he had long admired.

The Jovian is RIISE's Tempranillo-led statement — a genuinely rare thing in California, and a deliberate nod to the grape's Old World gravitas reinterpreted through the lens of Paso Robles' west side. The 2021 blend combines 65% Tempranillo with 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache, and 5% Syrah, co-fermented and completely destemmed before spending 26 months in 60% new French oak.

Sourced from four distinguished sites — Four Hearts, Paderewski, Full Draw, and ONX vineyards — it is the most structured and age-worthy wine in the RIISE portfolio, one that Jeb Dunnuck says will cruise for 15–20 years in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Jovian is a different beast with its Tempranillo-dominated nose of red and black fruits, spice, sandalwood, and peppery herb-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied red that's concentrated, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, tons of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age but will cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars. The blend is 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petit Sirah, 15% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, from the Four Hearts, Paderewski, Full Draw, and ONX Vineyards, and it was completely destemmed and spent 26 months in 60% new French oak. ~ 96 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Jovian is a co-fermented blend of 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It is a successful, modern expression of Paso Robles Tempranillo, which can often take on either an overly rustic or overly polished form. The nose opens with a medley of red and black fruits lifted by dried herbal accents and petrichor aromas. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with considerable tannic grip. It concludes with a serious, structured, sturdy finish of intense but precise tannins, welcomely filled in by its ripe, layered fruit profile. This will take a few years to integrate and become approachable, but it is very well executed, as with the rest of the Riise roster. ~94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Jovian is darkly alluring, mixing grilled sage with baking spices, olive and violet-laced blackberries on the nose. Silken textures and ripe red berry fruits flood the palate, while a saturation of minerals and fine tannins adds youthful poise toward the close. Tremendous depth and clarity are on display, as the 2021 finishes structured and long, leaving a balsamic tinge to resonate. The Jovian is the most powerful wine in the Riise portfolio. It is a blend of 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petite Sirah, 15% Grenache and 5% Syrah. ~ 94 Vinous Media
