About The Wine

RIISE is the second act of Juan Mercado, the self-taught vintner who built Realm Cellars into one of Napa Valley's most coveted cult labels.

Founded in 2019 and set against the rugged terrain of Paso Robles, RIISE was conceived to produce world-class Rhône varietal and Tempranillo-based wines that are powerful, textural, and light on their feet. Fruit is sourced from three estate properties — Shadow Canyon on York Mountain, the Willow Creek-based Arbor Vineyard, and the hillside Heaton Vineyard — alongside several of the region's most acclaimed sites, all overseen by viticulturists Kevin Wilkinson and Lucas Pope, with wines brought to life by winemaker Anthony Yount.

The name itself is a quiet declaration of intent: the Roman numeral II embedded in RIISE marks this as Mercado's deliberate second chapter, pursued on his own terms in a region he had long admired.

The Peace is RIISE's Syrah-led statement wine — darker, more brooding, and more structured than its siblings. The 2021 vintage blends 87% Syrah with 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Sirah, with 10% whole clusters retained for aromatic lift and spinal tension. Aged 26 months in 60% new oak, it is the most cellar-worthy expression in the RIISE lineup, one that Jeb Dunnuck called "blockbuster" while noting its rare capacity to balance power with poise

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Ripe black fruits, ground pepper, salted meats, game, and leafy herb notes all define the 2021 Peace, another powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that has a stacked mid-palate, a deep, layered mouthfeel, and blockbuster length. Based on 87% Syrah, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petite Sirah that saw 10% whole clusters and 26 months in 60% new oak, it’s going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and my money is on it seeing its 20th birthday in fine form. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2021 Peace combines 87% Syrah with 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Sirah. The nose is the darkest and most brooding of the Riise lineup, showing aromas of ripe black and purple fruits, new leather, dark spices and hints of savory, meaty touches that gain amplitude with aeration. The palate is rich, seamless and full-bodied but retains admirable poise and energy through the long, saturated, decadent finish. As with the rest of the Riise wines, it manages a rare midpoint between modern, slick textures and refined, alluring energy that should develop beautifully in the cellar. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Peace opens with mentholated freshness, blending crushed blackberries and plums with savory herbs and a hint of tobacco. Cool-toned and sleek, it builds tension as noticeably ripe wild berry fruit is balanced by a tinge of clove that emerges toward the close. The finish leaves pleasantly chewy concentration and liquid violet florals, tapering off with extreme length and blackberry resonance. ~93 Vinous Media
