About The Wine

Barossa is Shiraz country — everyone knows that.

But winemaker Kym Teusner has long argued that Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia's most underrated wines, and The Gentleman is his proof. This is the kind of Cab that earns 95 points and still overdelivers at the price.

The wine draws fruit from two distinct sites: high-elevation Eden Valley vineyards (around 400 metres above sea level) and the Riebke family vineyards in the Barossa Valley floor.

The Eden Valley component brings the lift, the blue fruit freshness, and the elegance you'd expect from a cooler-climate Cab — think Margaret River or even a well-priced Napa.

The Barossa fruit adds structure, dark chocolate, and rich cassis depth. Together, they make something greater than either site alone.

If you enjoy Napa Cabernet but want something with a more savory, food-friendly edge at a fraction of the price, The Gentleman deserves serious attention. It's generous enough to drink now but structured enough to reward a few more years in the cellar.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep crimson-purple in the glass. The nose opens with lifted aromas of blue fruits, red currant, and cassis from the Eden Valley fruit, layered with dark chocolate, rich blackberry, and hints of spice and cedar from the Barossa component.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied but polished — juicy and earthy with fine, savoury tannins that run long and firm. A crunchy red fruit freshness carries through the mid-palate, balanced by sweet cassis and a subtle dried herb note on the finish.

Source blocks are fermented separately in open fermenters, hand pumped over twice daily, then pressed to tank after 5–7 days on skins and aged in seasoned French oak for 12 months before blending and bottling.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Attractive nose of ripe cassis, blackberry and bitter chocolate. Rich and mellow with plenty of fine tannins supporting the warm and full body. Long powdery finish. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~ 92 James Suckling

Deep crimson with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant pastille and black cherry with hints of dark spice, eucalyptus, turned earth, sage, bay leaf, pressed flowers, licorice and blueberry tart. Some Ribena and herb notes flow in on the palate and there is a broody aspect to the wine's disposition, finishing with chalky tannins and a musky edge to the dark, dark berry fruits. ~ 92 James Halliday
