About The Wine

The Lageder family has worked in wine production for six generations, and today Alois and Alois Clemens Lageder run fifty-five hectares of biodynamic vineyards across Alto Adige.

The Krafuss Estate — a Renaissance residence that's survived largely unchanged since the 1500s — sits atop a gentle hill in Appiano, where vineyards enjoyed economic significance as early as the Middle Ages. In 1991, the family rehabilitated the hilltop parcels and planted them exclusively to Pinot Noir, the traditional variety of the area. In 2013, they transitioned to full biodynamic farming with Demeter certification.

The site does the work: elevation, exposure, limestone-rich soil, microclimate, and constant aeration create the dynamic tension Pinot Noir craves. The result is a wine that combines elegance, body, minerality, and a distinctive salinity — the signature of this hilltop terroir.

The 2022 opens with earthy strawberries, boiled beets, smoky notes, and orange vibrancy. Super-fresh on the palate, with full body and silky, elegant tannins soaked with violets and blood oranges. The finish brings peach tea and cinnamon.

This is Alto Adige Pinot Noir at its most precise — the kind of wine that makes you reconsider what the variety can do when the site and the farming are both dialed in.
