About The Wine

In 1902, Italian immigrant Nicola Catena planted his first vineyard in Mendoza. A century later, his great-grandson Nicolas pioneered viticulture at elevations no one thought possible — changing the story of Argentine wine by proving that Mendoza could stand with the world's finest.

In 1994, Nicolas planted the Adrianna Vineyard at 1,500 meters above sea level in Gualtallary, the highest and westernmost district in Tupungato. The altitude was experimental. The vineyard, named for his youngest daughter, sits on stony, chalky soils at the foot of the Andes — geologic remnants dating back 50 million years to the Eocene period. The family has subdivided Adrianna into over 200 distinct parcels, each farmed individually to encourage the truest expression of fruit. This is South America's Grand Cru.

2022 delivered a cold vintage with moderate 13.4% alcohol and strikingly high acidity — pH 3.37, 8.2 grams per liter of freshness locked into 3,400 bottles. The fruit underwent extended cold maceration, 60% to 80% whole cluster, for five to ten days below 50°F to extract aromatics. Wild yeasts fermented the juice over 12 to 22 days, followed by 18 to 21 months in decade-old French oak foudres.

The wine is floral and exuberant — violets, sage, arugula, lavender, chamomile, rosehip, crushed plums. Red fruit layered with black olives, wet stones, hibiscus, white pepper, cassis. Smooth tannins and a lengthy, metallic finish. Built for now or built for decades.

Nose: Lifted and floral — dried violets, blackberry and ripe plum over crushed river stone, with sage, arugula, lavender, black tea, and a touch of white pepper.

Palate: Taut and mineral-etched, with fine chalky tannins and electric acidity framing blackberry and cherry; ethereal and almost Pinot-like in its lift, finishing long and unwaveringly focused.

The 2022 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard River was aged for up to 21 months in French oak barrels. This was sourced from a terroir-driven plot, planted in 1992 in Gualtallary, Tupungato, on an old riverbed. The aromas reveal blackberry and ripe plum, with hints of grass, cherry, arugula, lavender and sage, complemented by black tea and herbal tension. This raw Malbec features chalky intensity and a fine, compact expression. It is well defined and exhibits a reductive character, making it quite intriguing.
