About The Wine

Chappellet has been farming Pritchard Hill since 1967, high on the eastern ridges above Napa Valley where elevation, rocky soils, and intense sun concentration produce Cabernet-family wines with power and precision. The estate's reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon, but this Cabernet Franc shows what happens when you give the grape the same hillside advantage — structured, aromatic, and built to age.

Cabernet Franc from Napa's mountain sites develops a different profile than the softer, herbaceous versions from the valley floor. The elevation trades lushness for tension, berry fruit for mineral spine, and immediate charm for layered complexity. This is Franc with grip and depth, closer in character to the hillside Cabs that made Pritchard Hill famous.

The 2022 vintage in Napa delivered concentrated fruit with natural acidity, a combination that gives wines both immediate appeal and the structure to develop over years. Chappellet's high-elevation sites saw slow, even ripening — ideal conditions for a grape that can turn green or jammy in less-disciplined hands.

This is the Cabernet Franc for Napa Cab drinkers who want the aromatics and lift of Franc without sacrificing the valley's signature weight and ageability. Pull the cork now for the floral and spice notes, or cellar it through the next decade as it builds secondary complexity.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Gorgeous black and blue fruits, spring flowers, graphite, and smoky tobacco notes all shine in the 2022 Cabernet Franc, a remarkably pure, silky, medium to full-bodied blend of 76% Cabernet Franc, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Merlot. While it shows the perfumed, accessible style of the vintage, it brings rock-solid depth and concentration, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Drink over the coming decade. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

Chappellet's 2022 Cabernet Franc is rather fruit-forward, loaded with cherries and only faintly herbal nuances. It's medium- to full-bodied, silky and velvety in texture across the palate and shows excellent structure and balance on the lingering finish. ~95 Wine Advocate

The nose is deep and brooding, with aromas of roasted coffee beans, blackcurrants and cedar. The palate is full-bodied with firmly integrated tannins and acidity and a viscous mouthfeel, giving notes of mulberry compote, cured meat and graphite. Very well constructed. Drinkable now, but best from 2028. ~93 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER
