About The Wine

Founded by Agustin Huneeus, the visionary behind some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated estates (Quintessa, Leviathan), Faust Wines was born from the belief that great Cabernet Sauvignon should embody both the soul of its land and the daring spirit of its maker. The winery’s name draws inspiration from the classic German legend, symbolizing an unrelenting pursuit of excellence—an ethos that guides every decision from vineyard to bottle.

Rooted in Coombsville, Napa’s southernmost AVA, Faust’s estate vineyard thrives in volcanic soils influenced by cool marine breezes. These conditions, paired with meticulous farming, yield Cabernet fruit of remarkable depth, balance, and freshness—a hallmark of the Faust style.

2022 The Pact exemplifies this vision, perfectly balancing the plush richness of a warm season with the vibrant freshness that defines the Coombsville terroir. The vintage began with a third consecutive dry, mild winter, giving way to an early budbreak and healthy canopy development. Warm summer days pushed even ripening, while a late-summer heat spell tested the vines’ resilience.

Fortunately, Faust’s cooler Coombsville estate—aided by proactive misting and irrigation—tempered the heat and slowed ripening. A dramatically cooler October then extended hangtime, allowing the fruit to reach optimal flavor concentration and phenolic maturity. The result is a wine of generosity and vitality, seamlessly combining power, freshness, and elegance in a vintage that stands as one of Faust’s most complex and balanced expressions to date.

The nose opens with generous aromatics—expressive dark fruit seasoned with a medley of spices and intriguing botanicals, the vineyard's distinctive star anise giving way to savory undertones of dried sage and the wild herb notes the French call garrigue.

In the mouth, the wine is supple but focused, its fine-grained tannin structure wrapped in thin velvet. Bright acidity lifts the palate and adds a textural interplay, carrying juicy luxardo cherry and black currant flavors into a finish savory with the graphite that is always the mark of our vineyard.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

So strong but subtle and silky on the surface and muscular underneath. Very concentrated, tight and powerful, with mineral, iron, cocoa and chalk flavors on a foundation of superfine, powdery tannins. It’s pretty but dense, beautifully concentrated, full-bodied, and well-balanced. Drinkable now, but best from 2030. ~ 95 James Suckling

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon The Pact boasts a healthy ruby/purple hue and is perfumed, floral, and elegant, almost in the style of the 2019, with red and dark fruits, spice, and loads of charm. Medium-bodied and seamless on the palate, it has fine tannins, terrific balance, and impressive accessibility. A blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot, it was aged 22 months in French oak, 45% new. Drink 2025–2035. ~ 93 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Faust Wines

Faust Wines blends bold ambition with terroir-driven nuance. Founded by Agustin Huneeus and his family, the estate stakes its claim in the volcanic soils and cool climate of Coombsville—a region once deemed too cool for Cabernet, now celebrated for its minerality and freshness.

From their 121-acre estate planted in 1998, Faust crafts wines such as The Pact and Faust that marry Napa power with precision finesse. Here, in a former dairy farm transformed into a vineyard laboratory, the team combines organic farming, sophisticated sorting and contemporary winemaking to articulate a modern Napa Cabernet with clarity, depth and elegance
