About The Wine

Ledge Vineyards sits atop a flat panoramic ledge of sandstone, sand, and clay in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles — land that winemaker Mark Adams grew up on, and that his parents acquired in the mid-1970s as a cattle ranch.

It wasn't until 2005 that Mark transformed the property, planting the first vines own-root and largely dry-farmed across what is now a 20-acre estate of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, Counoise, and white Rhône varieties. His formation came alongside childhood friend Justin Smith, whom he joined as an early employee at Saxum Vineyards — situated just a mile away — where he helped craft wines that earned Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2010. By 2009, Ledge had its first estate harvest, and the wines quickly earned a reputation for a distinctly old-world restraint: lower in alcohol than the Paso norm, marked by freshness, ultra-fine tannins, and a site-driven transparency that critics have compared to the finest bottlings of the Northern Rhône.

The Block 11 Bien Nacido Syrah is Ledge's single-vineyard statement from one of California's most storied vineyards. Bien Nacido — planted in the 1970s in the Santa Maria Valley, where Pacific marine air funnels inland to keep temperatures cool and ripening slow — has been named among the top 25 vineyards in the world by Wine & Spirits. Block 11 is planted to the Estrella Clone of Syrah, and the 2022 is 100% Syrah, aged 20 months in 70% new French oak, with a scant 250 cases produced.

Eye: Deep ruby-purple.

Nose: Blackberries, ground pepper, liquid violets, scorched earth, and graphite, with grilled herbs, ashen stones, musky blackcurrant, and exotic spice. A cool-climate elegance that Jeb Dunnuck notes could pass undetected in a lineup of Côte Rôtie.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a pure, concentrated, multi-dimensional personality. Silken and pliant, with ripe red and black fruit swirling across a core of bright acidity. The finish is potent in length yet only gently tannic, leaving a pleasantly bitter twang of dark chocolate under an air of sweet sage.

Drinking Window: Drink now through the coming decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Blackberries, ground pepper, liquid violets, scorched earth, and graphite are just some of the nuances in the 2022 Syrah Block 11 Bien Nacido Vineyard, an incredibly textured, medium to full-bodied Syrah that has ultra-fine tannins and a pure, concentrated, incredibly multi-dimensional personality. It shows the more elegant, pretty style of the vintage (it would pass undetected in a lineup of Côte Rôtie) and is clearly up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. It should be snatched up by savvy readers and enjoyed over the coming decade. This cuvee is 100% Syrah that spent 20 months in 70% new French oak. There are a scant 250 cases produced. Going forward, Ledge will be getting more fruit from Bien Nacido, so you can expect the production to increase. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

The nose is pure and perfumed, with classical syrah notes of plums, dark cherries, mocha and white pepper. The palate is full-bodied with seamless tannins and bright acidity, showing notes of red currants, potpourri, bergamot and cured meat. Made from the Estrella clone, giving a complete and fresh wine with excellent balance. Drink or hold. ~ 95 James Sucling

Classic to the core, the 2022 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard blossoms in the glass with an array of grilled herbs, ashen stones, musky blackcurrant and exotic spice. Pure elegance, it is silken and pliant, with ripe red and black fruit swirling across a core of bright acidity. The finish is potent in length yet only gently tannic, leaving a pleasantly bitter twang of dark chocolate under an air of sweet sage. ~95 Vinous Media
