About The Wine

Levo Wine is the creation of self-taught winemaker Bret Urness, who founded the label in 2011 after a pile of rejection letters from California's enology programs sent him in a far more interesting direction — into the remote cellars of Portugal's Douro Valley, where he spent four months making wine by hand with just a pump, a pair of boots, and a journal. Those primitive lessons stuck.

Back in California, Urness set up shop in Paso Robles' Tin City — an industrial warehouse district turned craft beverage hub — where he now produces small-batch Rhône-varietal wines from some of the Central Coast's most coveted vineyard sites.

The name is rooted in the Latin verb levō — to raise, lift, elevate — and reflects Urness's stated stylistic goal: rich, structured, voluptuous California reds that never sacrifice varietal correctness, electricity, or aromatic lift. Labels and wine names change every vintage by design, creating a sense of immediacy and rarity that has earned Levo a devoted cult following.

The Warm Regards is Levo's Syrah flagship for the 2022 vintage — and one of the most celebrated wines Urness has made. The blend is 84% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 2% Grenache, and 1% Graciano, drawn from an exceptional roster of Central Coast growers spanning both Ballard Canyon and Willow Creek AVAs, including Stolpman, Kimsey, Larner, G2, Fulldraw, and Caliza.

Hand sorted and fermented in stainless tank and small open-top bins over 7–14 days with approximately 10% whole cluster, it was then pressed gently to 225L barriques for 17 months in a mix of new, once-used, and neutral French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Ripe wild berry fruits and sweet lavender tones carry across seamlessly silky textures, with minerality gripping tactilely through the finish — pleasantly bitter and mouth-watering to the last drop.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Jammy blackberries, peppery herbs, liquid flowers, and graphite all emerge from the 2022 Syrah Warm Regards, an incredibly seductive, pure, medium to full-bodied Syrah that has ultra-fine tannins and just about flawless overall balance. It's up with the crème de la crème of 2022. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Warm Regards Syrah is made from 84% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 2% Grenache, and 1% Graciano, using about 10% whole cluster. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bounding out with exuberant notes of juicy plums, blackberries, and black olives, with hints of tar, black pepper, and underbrush. Medium to full bodied, the palate delivers vibrant black fruit with loads of spicy accents and amazing tension, textured with ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with great length. ~95 The Wine Independent

~93 The Wine Palate

Musky black currants, sage, kalamata olive and exotic spice slowly come to life in the 2022 Syrah Warm Regards. This soothes with its ripe wild berry fruits and sweet lavender tones all carried across seamlessly silky textures. The 2022 shows its minerality through the finish, gripping and tactile yet not overly structured, instead leaving a pleasantly bitter tinge that keeps the mouth watering for more. ~92 Vinous Media
