About The Wine

Paitin's story runs deep — established in 1796 when Benedetto Elia purchased the farmhouse, cellar, and vineyards from Luigi Pelissero. By 1893 the family bottled their first Barbaresco Sori Paitin; five years later they were exporting it commercially. Today the Pasquero-Elia family — Giovanni, Silvano, and Luca — run the estate, farming 17 hectares organically (certified 2019) and weaving in biodynamic techniques without chasing the certification.

Sori Paitin is the jewel of Serraboella, one of Barbaresco's more structured crus — the kind of site that builds wine with the architecture of Montestefano or Albeisani. The name tells you what you need to know: in Piemontese, *sori* is the sun-soaked parcel at the top of the hill. This one is planted to 35- to 70-year-old Nebbiolo vines on sand and white marl, and in the best years Paitin bottles an old-vine Riserva from the same block. The 2022 comes from the same dirt — just released a vintage early.

The winemaking is traditional and patient: three to eight weeks on skins, aged in large neutral Austrian botti from Stockinger, no toast. Paitin experimented with shorter macerations and smaller wood in the late '80s, reversed course by 2001, and has been running longer, gentler extractions with submerged cap ever since. The result is Barbaresco with backbone and poise — nothing manipulated, nothing rushed.

The 2022 is vibrant and structured in equal measure: raspberry and kirsch framed by clove, mushroom, hazelnut, sweet spice threading through the fruit.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Because the Vecchie Vigne was not made in 2022, fruit from the old vines was directed to this wine instead. The Paitin 2022 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is a beautiful wine with dark elements of graphite, dusty root, pencil shaving and licorice. This site has active limestone, and this brings a sense of greater volume in terms of mouthfeel, tannic firmness and balanced acidity. ~ 96 Robert Paker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin is a classy, promising wine. It offers gorgeous inner perfume and plenty of allure. Sweet red cherry, blood orange and exotic spices build in a potent yet classically mid-weight Barbaresco. There will be no Riserva in 2022; all the best lots went into this bottling. ~ 94 Vinous Media

Well defined aromas express a striking mix of clove, mushroom and hazelnut. On the palate, sweet spice infuses the raspberry canvas. This is vertical and fairly austere, with dry tannins around the edges which bolster the wine with a forceful grip. Steely acidity accentuates, and some cooling mint, rose and pepper emerge as the wine opens. Dynamic rather than elegant, and in need of more time. In Piemontese dialect, sorì refers to the best exposed slope of a hill. For the Paitin estate, that means the warmest, steepest section of the Serraboella MGA, which faces southwest. ~ 94 Decanter

A generous, lively red, this evokes strawberry, cherry, raspberry, rose hip, eucalyptus and mineral flavors. Firmly structured, with a linear path of assertive tannins gripping the finish. Nonetheless, this is long and detailed. Best from 2029 through 2047. ~93 Wine Spectator
