About the Offer

Andy Erickson, a winemaker renowned for his work with icons like Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate, embarked on an extraordinary journey to craft this wine. Armed with a map and a palate honed by decades of experience, Andy explored 56 distinct blocks of Cabernet in the famed To Kalon Vineyard, tasting and walking through each to capture their essence. His attention to detail went beyond the vineyard; he even designed the fermenters used to create this extraordinary wine, ensuring every step of the process was tailored to perfection.

To Kalon Vineyard is no ordinary piece of Napa Valley. Planted over 150 years ago by H.W. Crabb, its history is as rich as the wines it produces. Named "To Kalon," Greek for "Highest Beauty," the vineyard sits in a sweet spot between the Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges, where well-drained gravelly soils and a perfect blend of sun, fog, and wind create ideal conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The HWC is named in Crabb's honor and sourced from a single block planted to a heritage clone of Cabernet Sauvignon — one that produces impossibly small clusters of tiny berries, yielding wines of remarkable energy and concentration.

Andy Erickson's passion for To Kalon Vineyard is evident in every sip. Having first encountered this iconic site as a student nearly 30 years ago, Andy has been captivated ever since. His unparalleled experience, including time under legends like Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, has culminated in this wine — a masterpiece that honors the vineyard's legacy while showcasing his own artistry. The 2022 vintage serves as a bookend to California's historic drought, with limited water availability driving yields down and concentration up. A dramatic Labor Day heatwave rapidly accelerated ripening, but Winemaker Tony Biagi's expertise in precise harvest timing and meticulous canopy management kept the wine focused, resulting in remarkable concentration, firm structure, and ripe tannins — a testament to To Kalon Vineyard's enduring resilience and legacy.

Wines Included

100% Heritage Clone Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 100% new French oak. The nose opens with soaring aromas of black currant, blackberry, and dark chocolate, with savory undercurrents of cocoa and black olive that evoke the forest floor character of To Kalon's ancient benchland soils. On the palate, the wine is rich, robust, and tannin-laden, framed by cedar and dark fruit, yet retains the precision and focus that defines great To Kalon Cabernet. The finish is long and powerful. Drink 2027–2040.

Critical Reviews

This sleek, almost sweet wine is delicious, floral and fruity, almost syrupy and ready to drink soon. Tasty raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, spearmint and milk chocolate flood the palate. Rather soft tannins add to its silky, agreeable character. Drink now or hold. ~96 James Suckling

The product of a "really severe selection," according to winemaker Tony Biagi, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon H.W.C. is a strong effort. Produced in roughly the same volume as the 2021, it smells purple, easily mixing cherries and cassis on the nose. Somehow in this torrid vintage, this medium- to full-bodied, rather open-knit wine retains a sense of freshness, adding hints of raspberry sorbet on the long, zesty finish. ~96 Wine Advocate

The H.W.C. is named after Hamilton Walker Crabb, who established To Kalon Vineyard in 1868. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a Heritage Clone selection sourced from a single block within To Kalon, planted by Robert Mondavi in the 1960s. The low-yielding clone was crafted by winemaker Andy Erickson in collaboration with Tony Biagi and aged for 18–20 months in 100% new French oak. This voluptuous and expressive wine bursts with super-fragrant Bing cherry fruit and a lush, richly textured palate with gentle sweetness. The pronounced tannins are firm yet inviting, offering a softer grip than in the 2021 vintage. The perfumed character elevates the mid-palate, which is both incredibly dense and deeply layered. The long, persistent finish is marked by a saline-mineral, ironstone quality, giving this wine tension, depth, and remarkable ageing potential. ~95 Decanter

Red and black plums, spice, and flowery incense notes all define the aromatics, and the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon H. W. C. is forward, plush, and full-bodied, bringing a mouthful of sweet To Kalon fruit and richness. Tony commented that this was a hard blend to put together given the tiny berries of the clone, but unquestionably, it's a beautiful 2022. Drink bottles over the coming decade. Drink 2025-2035. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck
